Okay - enough naming and shaming! What are the best/reliable DVD player retailers?

If you`re after cheap/quality players that play all regions and RCE but you`re still after goo customer service and warranty reliability, where do you go?

Tesco (Wharfedale M5), Argos (everything in their catalogue), Debenhams (Lecson 900), John Lewis Partnership (everything they sell) - for the simple reason that they all sell multi-region players, they don`t try to sell you unnecessary warranties (hello Dixons Group) and, most importantly, they don`t kick up a fuss when you take your player back.

John Lewis certainly win in terms of warranty, but tend not to sell the cheaper end of the market players.

Tesco or Argos for me, if I were buying a player today.

Argos are good. I bought a DVD player from them because I wanted to use a remote hack that I wasn`t sure would work, and if it didn`t I could take it back, no hassle. I could have got it for £20 cheaper from comet, dixons etc. but they would not take it back unless it was faulty.
(incidentally, my 1st DVD player needed an aiwa stereo remote to hack, so I simply bought an aiwa stereo from Argos, performed the permanent hack, and took back the stereo!)
Only snag is they are pricey because they only change their prices a few times a year, whereas others change weekly.

Hi Clayts,
R U sure about J Lewis selling multi region....I was at the High Wycombe branch just last weekend and they said quite categorically that they only sold region 2

I took my faulty Cyberhome back to Richers Sounds after 5 weeks and they did me a straight swap no hassle.

I took the DVD player back without the box, manuals and leads etc - didnt make a fuss - simply gave me a new player out of the box and kept the bits and pieces.

Even the warranty seems a damn sight cheaper than others.

Paul

I think they sell the Toshiba and the Samsung players don`t they, or am I mistaken ? These are multi-region capable via a remote hack, so technically they`re correct, I suppose !!!

Good point, well made.

For good service, knowledegable staff, (who know how to have a laugh, well all but one who is a misareble sod.) and a good product range.(Toshiba SD100 to the Arcam FMJ-DV27) It has to be Sevenoaks Sound and Vision (Leicester) But then again I would say that.

All the best,

Andrew.

clayts, as I am sure you know, as the UK belongs to the world trade organisation and any UK company wanting to produce a DVD player has to sign up to the DVD forum. This means they are only aloud to sell a player in the region it is coded to be used. Of course if you were to leave the UK you would take this quality product with you. With this in mind the thoughtful chaps at Arcam allow you to change the region to the one where you are moving to via the service menu. Hopfully the general public will not abuse this and use it to play R1 discs in the UK.

I hope this clears this matter up for you.

All the best,

Andrew.

Clayts - have the Toshiba machines now become hackable with the remote?
