Blackstar now charging for P&P!

MadPom (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 12th April 2001, 16:03

Anyone noticed that www.blackstar.co.uk have just started charging for P&P? I bought a video for my sister on Sunday night & a dvd for myself, which was P&P-free. Just checked the site today and now everything is the same price, but in small letters under the price is "Postage: Single rate item" starting at £1.40 for a single dvd.

Is it just me or is this a sneaky way of putting up the prices so that you only notice at the checkout stage?

Rob!

Blackstar`s prices are too dear anyway. They charge high-street prices. I wouldn`t bother ordering from them!

Use Play or DVD Box Office for DVD`s.

About 18 months ago, Blackstar were in my opinion, "The Dog`s Bolloxs". Granted, I wasn`t buying DVDs from them back then, but they did some cracking deals on new videos. They now appear to have let success get to their head. As pointed out above, why on earth would you bother ordering a DVD for £20 from them? I`m afraid they`ve lost my custom. Long live the smaller dealers like musicbox etc and the well established ones like play247 that understand the point of selling DVDs online is that it cuts out the middlemen on the highstreet and as such, can offer quite good discounts.

Learn this Blackstar, and you might get my prolific custom back.

Sadly, Kenny, that`s the way online retailers are going. When Kingfisher bought out Streets Online (DVD Street) it was the beginning of the end for a lot of the smaller firms (eg DVD Plus and Encore hit the wall), as they simply could not compete.

Sad to say, but maybe Blackstar are going the same way (Encore started added postage on again before they collapsed), which would be a shame.

However, as you say, there are still a lot of cheap firms out there, and sometimes it`s worth going further afield (eg http://www.ezydvd.com.au - four days to get a DVD to me - amazing; and http://www.absound.ca are two that spring to mind)

Blackstar sent out a thing saying they were going to charge for delivery but were reducing the costs of the products by that amount i.e. so they remain the same, they claim they have to do it to make it easier. It may be tax related i suppose.

however i agree Blacksar are expensive, they were great when they did 20% off preorder - which was worth it on boxsets, but now its only 10% so many other places are cheaper, including the high street.

Definately try ezydvd, they are very prompt 3 days delivery from australia, and all the discs ive had work perfectly. just watch out that they don`t give you the final cost until you recceive your order, you have to get your calculator out to check the conversion and postage.

I agree with what tripodjw, if that is your real name, in that Blackstar rule for their customer service but i find myself shopping at play247 to get my DVD`s cheap. Superb.
