RE: [VIDEO] Windows 7 RIP

On the plus side, everything's back up and running, with all that drive swapping actually being an exercise in futility as nearly everything I wanted to keep was saved in the 'windows.old' folder. Still better safe than sorry. GTAV re-installed and nothing lost. Think it's a cleaner installation this time as well. Not as stuttery.

The only issue is that damn key. I've found a way of extending the activation deadline, which apparently can be done a couple of times to a maximum of 120 days, so the pressure's off there. Been trying to find a copy of W7 cheap online with an unused key, but most of the ones I've seen are from sites that look ropey as hell.

Pete, I don't know how dodgy this is, but I saw it and thought of you anyway:

Cheers Rob. Looks like something to consider. Looking at the installation instructions it looks like you have to install W10 first, then enter the product key. That might be the first stumbling block as I still need a W7 key to validate this version before I can look at putting 10 on. Still, it's an avenue I didn't have before.

Actually, looking at off-site reviews it may indeed be a tad sketchy. Lots of imprecise positive reviews but a few descriptive negs.

I have still got a win7 computer, and never put any automatic updates on it ever. I just do not like windows10. Any problems I just reinstate factory settings and wipe everything. I keep crucial info on a seperate disc.

I am actually considering buying a new desktop with winXP on it for my birthday. There is a guy on Ebay that builds cheap computers to your spec and it works out at around £120 complete with 17" monitor, ( I have a lot of programs that do not run on more modern windows even win7, so an XP computer would be handy).

So there I was, happy in my lounge, watching TV, eating dinner, then suddenly, someone barges in, stands in front of the TV screen, starts taking stuff off my perfectly good shelves, tears the old shelves down, and starts putting up new shelves that look much the same as the old ones. I can't do a thing about it, so I just give up on what I was doing and walk out of the room. I pop back in every half hour to see if anything's changed. Nothing. The next morning I walk in, the shelves are finished all brand new and shiny, and the git has left all my books strewn on the floor, so I spend the rest of the day sorting them out and putting them back on my new shelves.

In other words, Windows 10 1803 has updated to Windows 10 1903.

On a happier note, I've got the product key thing sorted out. I'm not entirely sure if the W10 wraparound update will take now, but last I heard, W7 was still getting updates anyway (and rumblings abound of a way to receive the business updates for the home editions), so I'm all good for the time being.

Things changed after 1903, apparently 1909 is at the discretion of the user, instead of an automatic and unavoidable update.

I spent most of the end of 2019 trying to get the machine updated, as 1803 fell out of service, and a warning kept popping up on my update page telling me to get a newer version of Windows. Finally towards the end of last year, I got the thing saying it was ready to download and install, and it never did. I only got this error message saying that the install failed every day, not that it got as far as installing it. I went through all this faff with deleting distribution folders and downloading again and it would never work. Then last month I tried flushing the dns, and the computer completely stopped picking up the update at all.

I'd given up on it, then the day before, my  keyboard input started lagging as I was typing, and yesterday it did the same thing, Thought I had a virus, and started a scan, then looked at Windows update, and saw it was trying to install 1903 again.  That took around 12 hours or more. And I'm finally only 12 months out of date!

I think I'll live with this version for a few months before I try 1909, or 2003 I guess it'll be by then. I don't know if something in this is busted and I have to roll back yet.
