New fold out mobile phones

Let's just cut to the chase,
£2000!
TWO THOUSAND POUNDS!?!? for a mobile phone. Mental!

Both Samsung & Huawei will be selling a fold out double screen that becomes a tablet. Yes it looks nice but who parts with that kind of money for a mobile?
You can get a huge 4k ultra HD TV for around 600 quid.
Hell, u can get 2 iPhone max phones for that much.
So, who's gonna get one?

I watched that on BBC1 'Click program' last night, and they said they can see a future of foldable bendy screens not just for phones, tablets, but also on clothing, like gloves, hats etc, and on any curved surfaces.

But..there will not be a future for it if it is so expensive. Likely prices will drop once it becomes more popular, but it needs to be cheaper to be popular, Catch 22.

When the iPad first came out I didn't see a need for one, but once it got to the iPad 3 I had a need and I'm still using it most days (mostly now just for YouTube videos whilst washing up).

I'm not sure what a fold out phone would offer quite yet, but perhaps at some point when they iron everything out and have the form factor right, it'll be a phone or a tablet, whichever you want at the time?

one of the "kids" at work couldn't understand why I was happy with such a cheap mobile phone, but he pretty much does everything on his phone (iPhone something or other, not the latest one). I'm old fashioned I like to have a keyboard for writing on forums, facebook, emails etc (you can probably tell the few times I've used my phone to post here ;) )

He does use it more or less like a laptop, if someone send him a word doc, he'll happily read it on his phone, he'll use a computer to write a document, but he says he uses the phone for just about everything.

I guess it's what so many ppl are used to now. I remember when someone at work wanted a new fangled laptop with no cd rom - because it was small and light, seemed crazy to me to have such a small screen, but she travelled a lot with work, so was more concerned about something she could use easily on a plane /train and didn't want to have to use a laptop suitcase/trolley bag to lug around a mobile workstation.

I guess these days as well, you can cast it to a monitor, use a docking station, rdp to a server etc.

But well, let's just say I'm still happy with my sub £150 phone I bought a year ago, and like the previous phone, I'll replace it when it dies.

A guy I used to work with bought the top of the rang M$ Surface, again thought he was insane, until I played with it, and it's very nice, very small, but is a complete workstation, it is no ordinary tablet :)

Phones sales have stagnated over the last few years. They all look the same and do pretty much the same thing so people hang on to them for a bit longer. Phone makers are looking for that game changer and I think they've found it.

I think once the prices drop, most phones will be some form of folder in 5 years just like all phones now are basically a 5-6" slab of screen.

I have heard some seasoned tech jounos ask "what's the point?" but ultimately who wouldn't want to carry around a tablet that slims down to a standard mobile?
