Interestingly most companies have internet rules governing software allowed in or out of an IT network, and can be very strict.

Since memory sticks have been invented, I have always backed up my works computer on a project, even where they specifically state that it is a sacking offence by staff to do so. I have always been contract staff, and not their staff,  so I have to cover my arse by copying my work, in case of legal action taken against me outwith my control.

Example: Years ago was told to take anti-aircraft warning lights off the project of a boilerhouse chimney at a hospital as a cost saving of £7000, which i refused to do as the project engineer. The owners (client) decided with the accountants to remove them as aircraft authorities said there was no low flying aircraft there, although I noted to them that military jets did go over at low altitude occasionally. So I said I want that in writing, and have always saved that letter on memory stick, in case if there was God forbid an accident , as Engineers are always first to be blamed.

Two years later they must have got worried, and put the lights on the chimney at more cost as they needed the scaffolding put back up.
