Console yourself with the fact that many others have the likes of yourself to thank for this. It's only the actions of yourself and others that will have made Apple finally sit up, take note and stop arrogantly ignoring the little man. Well done indeed!!

a few letters were exchanged, my mate "won" without going to court, seemed easiest solution.

I've taken an insurance broker to court many moons ago for a £10 refund they never paid, back when that was a significant chunk of my weekly wage. I won as they just ignored everything until the bailiff threat was made.
Also took a surveyor nearly to court, they settled. As he was working in cahoots with the Estate agent and just mailed in a survey which missed Dry rot the consultant surveyor said he could smell even walking through the front door.
Very little satisfaction financially as you never get what it's cost. Just that little part of you thinking 'F*** with me will you' which is I suspect how you're feeling Rob.

I will, and I have, but I've stopped buying directly from Apple. I now buy from Amazon, so in theory it becomes their problem if Apple won't cover faults, and Apple get less money from me.

Pick your billionaire Cook or Bezos. I'm not one to moralise the amount of money that goes Amazon's way from our house. Only real reason I'm not an Apple fan is price and value.

I'd recommend using John Lewis if you can. Prices are normally competitive on apple products and often have a 2 year warranty. Used them for an apple Tv, homepod and iphoneX.
