maybe should have given that a go.

bitdefender prompted that there was a new version with various improvements, so i clicked to download and setup.

So it wanted to uninstall old version on running new setup, make sense, so prompted to do that, but failed, so wanted reboot, rebooted ,new setup auto started, said old version present, so had to remove that, which it did this time, then wanted a reboot, which it did, then auto started install, found spybot, which it had to remove, so I said yes, which then wanted another reboot!

the best bit, is the opening the web browser for the uninstall survey, "why did you want to uninstall bitdefender?" :(

Turned on the old Vista laptop, only to learn that BitDefender free is no longer supported on Vista, but it did offer me 6 months of the 2015 paid version for free, so I thought I'll have that. Same crap, as above, uninstall old version, reboot, uninstall spybot, reboot, install the new version, spend an age waiting for it to update. Find loads of optimisation tools that will make my PC leaner, meaner and faster, which let's face it, I need on this old laptop. Ran the tools. It kindly emptied my recycle bin for me without asking, and that was it.

And I learn that unless I turn its SSL scanning off, I can't use the Internet, as every website has an unsafe certificate according to it. Smart software my arse!

That Kaspersky free option isn't released in the UK till October. October can't come fast enough. Although I bet it doesn't work on Vista.

Disappointing, on the Win 10 preview 32bit desktop under the tv, tried a couple of usb sticks, in the 2 different ports, as soon as I plug them in, BSOD trufos.sys KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and that file belongs to BitDefender :(

the missus' laptop is doesn't suffer this problem when plugging in a usb stick.

The TV PC did also have another big win 10 update recently, so I guess something isn't playing nicely :(

Windows Defender now has like a 99% detection rate on av-test.org

There really is no need to pay for BSODs.

I'm using the free one, there's probably an option to turn off scanning on plugging in devices or something I'll have a tinker when I get chance, I don't use it that much, was just annoyed when it happened, then happened again, and again :(

thanks, I'll have a read up on how the MS one is doing then, that's surprising news ;)

Alternatively I'll check out the free kapersky ones, I know it's not out here yet but somewhere I saw how to get it anyway :)

uninstalled Bitdefender and USB working again.

MSE scores low on some other sites, and even on the one is scores well, does badly in terms of performance. Bitdefender is a constant high scorer, Avast and AVG (surprisingly?) being the other 2 contenders, so I may go for Avast again on the PC, and if the nags get too annoying look again.

maybe cc cleaner before Bitdefender may help, perhaps my problem installing update files get left behind which caused problems as didn't find other ppl moaning after updating, or could be a peculiarity of running bitdefender with insider preview, as the laptop hasn't had any issues.

https://www.guidezilla.net/best-antivirus/ has a good review on some. We use BitDefender at work and it works great. If you are looking for a cheap / free alternative, AVG seems to do its job well.
