Pain in the arse, eventually got the installer to work, had to unplug usb hard drive, rookie mistake should have worked that out sooner :(

annoyingly, have same problem after installing a couple of apps, processor goes sky high and can open explorer but no other apps, so this could be a long slow painful test add 1 thing at a time and see how it goes, or install a different os to see if it's hardware :(

I wish I didn't know about computers and wasn't interested in them sometimes ;)

I don't think it would be the hardware, it might be a driver, but I would suspect something software related.

Did you install AV? I've had this issue before with AV, which made me switch to another.

Hadn't got that far. Unless it's MS's own causing issues :(

Couldn't/didn't see, everything said 0%, so I'm wondering if it's Dropbox. I guess this is a downside of programs auto updating these days, generally it's seamless, but that is one of the first progs I installed yesterday :(

installed a couple of things, and then took an image, just installed dropbox, which is now getting files, so it will be "interesting" to see what happens after next reboot...

so far so good, I had forgotten to adjust power settings, was only reminded when could see the light blinking while trying to watch tv! Anyway, left it for a while, waggled touchpad on keyboard (I have one of those wireless Logitech keyboard with built in touchpad, ideal for living room use), and came back to life no problem, doing another image before installing anything else.

oh well, one of life's little mysteries, not sure if that's :) or :(

dropbox, irista, vlc, ff,chrome installed and it's working fine, so maybe whatever was broken got a fix in the time it took me to reinstall and install it twice :)

I've been meaning to put Win 10 64bit on it for a while, but since 32 was working fine I didn't have the incentive. That means now, if I can be arsed I can have play with Hyper V. Where I used to work I used VirtualPC, and before that VMWare and Citrix, and I've played with VMWare and virtualBox at home. VirtualPC I found a bit rubbish, but I'm told HyperV is much better, but doesn't run on 32bit OS, does require more setting up though, as you have to set up a virtual router and configure a virtual network properly I think.

Something to do if the missus goes out when the girls have gone to bed :)

https://www.virtualbox.org/

It's really good, I use it for everything from CentOS, another Linux distro, WinXP for using my older Epson printer and scanner, and even MS-DOS for some old games.

Windows 10's "Controlled Folder Access" Anti-Ransomware Feature Is Now Live

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10s-controlled-folder-access-anti-ransomware-feature-is-now-live/

Quote:

With the release of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update last week, the "Controlled Folder Access" that Microsoft touted in June is now live for millions of users.

As the name hints, the Controlled Folder Access feature allows users to control who can access certain folders.

The feature works on a "block everything by default" philosophy, which means that on a theoretical level, it would be able to prevent ransomware when it tries to access and encrypt files stored in those folders.
