Broadband, how long should a line take to settle?

Jimbo :oÞ (Elite Donator) posted this on Thursday, 3rd September 2009, 15:25

Well, that`s me switchover to O2 completed.
Actually happened whilst I was online and signed in to AOL!

So, using AOL early this afternoon and my speedtest rates me around 6 Meg to 6.5.
Router states the usual 8 meg downstream.

Switchover to O2 occurs. Everything obviously is down including my phone line.
15 minutes or so later and it`s all back up.
Enter the new router settings for O2 (I still have my old Netgear connected) and I`m off n surfing.
This is where the issues start to arise :/

According to my package I`m on "up to 20Mb" but "expected to get 13Mb".
I speedtested it and I`m getting 3 Meg :(
I AM however getting faster upspeed at 90k instead of 50k a sec and ping time has improved to 37Ms area.
Checked the router status page and the line is now stating similar to above, 3250 down and 950 or summat up.

So.. as per the subject line... how long should I wait before I ask what the hell`s happened to my speed?
Confuses me that the same line drops to half what it was before the switch but I don`t know the technicalities of it all.

Also... I can`t see how, but would switching to the O2 wireless router make any difference? Trying to avoid that as it means I`d need to setup my Wii, PS3 and the family`s wii`s etc again.

Final note for anyone considering it, seems my O2 connection reports as a Be connection so I would have shot myself right in the foot had I gone to them and paid £18 a month for what I should now get for a tenner!

Rebooted the router, now reporting 12511 downstream and getting speedtests in the 10 Meg area.

Here`s hoping it improves a tad more to get closer to the 20 or even the 13.

I just stumpled upon our welcome letter for sky broadband this morning.

Basically it says to allow 7 days for the line to stabilise.

Wish we could get a better connection, supposed to be on 2Mb but most of the time getting 1.3Mb.

Anyone tried one of these iPlates from BT, they were on the gadget show a few weeks back having a good review, so I ordered one but it didn`t make any difference.

All the best

Gerald.

Ted: The iPlates only help if you have extension wiring that is causing problems. It`s the same as cutting the bell wire, see here: http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/bellwirenutshell.html
For more help on any Sky issues try the forum on http://www.skyuser.co.uk

Actually Smee, I`m not so sure it`s only for users with extension wiring.
It applies to the master socket and from what I`ve understood people have seen some benefits with it applied and their modem/router plugged directly into that.

However, I do agree that it is essentially just cutting the bell wire.

Yeah, sorry what I meant was it fixes a problem caused by the extension wiring not necessarily that the BB is connected to an extension.

Jimbo O2 usually take around 3 days to do thier version of DLM, they suggest leaving the router pluged in and switched on with the minimal of reboots whilst this trains your line.

Im switching from sky to O2 just waiting on sky to issue me my MAC.

Have you tried the O2 forums? Here v helpful advice

As to the O2 router its suggested thats its pants for PS3 / Xbox use and to use another router.

really ? that surprises me, cos when i was living at home, i used to use my 20meg ntl BB for downloads etc, & my o2 for online gaming via wifi, & never had a problem, tho, i never used it for streaming etc.

Well, I`m hoping you end up with a good speed - I`m about to switch to o2 and, as I live no more than 15 metres from a BT exchange building, I was hoping to take them up on their 20Mb package. However....I`ve gone online and checked the available speeds to me and it states `up to 6 Mb`. So, I call BT to be told that the maximum I can get from any provider will be 8Mb......how gutted am I?!! I`m guessing that, with contention, I`ll be lucky to get 4.....how close do I have to be???

*edit* - just whacked my postcode into the o2 website and it tells me I`ll get 1 or 2 Mb.

Truly gutted.

On the official and unoffical forums the O2 routers gain a hammering for being crap for online gaming. This is the rebadged thompson routers, Im not sure if thats used wired or wireless.

The advice seems to be to get a cheap ex sky netgear router and reflash it.
