New Apple MacBook "Air"

Firstly, a stupid name for a laptop, but anyway...I very much like the look of it!

I`m just hoping they don`t have a stupid UK price otherwise I`ll have to try and wangle another jolly (I mean work trip) to the US $1799 (~£900) .....isn`t too bad for an ultra thin laptop!

There`s 2 on offer:
store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=7B72367C&node=home/shop_mac/family/macbook_air

Both have 2Gb of RAM, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth etc..
Base model is Intel C2D @ 1.6Ghz with a 80Gh 1.8" hard drive
Next model up is Intel C2D @ 1.8Ghz with a 64Gb solid state (flash) drive.

I`d love the flash drive version, but not sure it`ll be worth that much!

Can you explain what the difference in hard drives are?

The 80GB one is a traditional (but very very dinky) one with moving parts. The 64GB one doesn`t have moving parts. The latter is more expensive to make, but is safer in a laptop/mp3 player/portable harddrive.

Edit: I`m amazed how thin it is, but simultaneously worried about snapping it! The keyboard is really ugly though.

To be honest, if there is no change in the size of the machine, I`d plump for the standard hard drive because the price increase on the next model is massive.

Yeah, that`s what I`m thinking.

Its a hell of a jump in price. Performance would be a lot better on the 64Gb flash drive...but not sure if its £650 better!

i dunno how much faster, if at all a flash drive would be, the fastest usb flash key is still many times slower than a standard usb hard drive, & the principle seems the same, although differently implemented. but,,,,, the flash drive does have some pretty big advantages, the biggest probably being the massively lower power consumption.

at $2000 with current conversation, thats £1000 ish :) lol, only about 3 years ago i paid more than that for a chunky vaio running 30gig HD & 1.6 celeron Cpu...

& yes miles, i likeeee i wanteeee but,,, i not affordeeee :( :( :(
