Don`t you just love that freshly installed feeling...
Was getting fed up with the PC running slowly again (despite the fact it has 2 x 250Gb WD drives in a striped RAID configuration, 2Gb of 800Mhz memory, and an Intel C2D 2.4Ghz processor in it)....so I decided to restore the image I took the last time it was built fresh (remembering to restore the wpa files because I`ve upped the memory since last time).
And lo and behold its running fine again now. Therefore, its just the OS that gets so clogged up and full of s*** that causes the slow down.
Even though I`m very good about ensuring there are no unnecessary programs running at startup. All services running are those that I want/need running and the disks are defragged regularly.
Its stuff like this that really makes me want to move to an alternative (still not sure about this linux business though!).
Am trying to install MacOSX on a spare computer at the mo (the version that should be installable on a `normal` PC ;)) - so I`ll see how that is.

OSX !? , Already there brother ! ( joined the cult a LONG time ago, after to many blue screens ?! ) Sure Apple hardware is expensive but it works ( stand by for PC users to start now ? )
Good luck with OSX on PC though, I`ve seen a lot of good things from that option ( you get to be able to play games as well as OSX ?! )

I love leopard. Its so much better than vista.
The only problem I have with it is that, in a support environment, its not that well supported.
One of our staff had a mac at home and wanted to install tesco broadband. The setup CD only comes with mac modem drivers so you manually have to configure the dialler yourself, which is beyond the average user and totally against the simple mac ethos.
But, yeah, I love them. Being a hardcore win admin, I had never used them, but the company I work for now has as many macs as pcs, so ive been thrown in at the deep ed a bit. Im going on a course in the new year, so that will up my awesome quota a little.
Oh, and since im going on.....the BBCode buttons on this site dont work on safari.

although i do like mac OsX, it`s just a shame it doesn`t do what i need it to do, unlike XP ;)

Actually, to be fair to Chris - I don`t remember the last time I had a BSOD either.
But that`s because (probably like him) I`m quite careful about my hardware & software. Always take precautions ;)
I just get fed up with the bloated feeling of XP and the inexplicable slowdowns.
Plus, I really, really, really don`t like Vista (at the moment) - so am looking at the alternatives.

hehe, theres a "run vista" app for the iphone, tbh, i had no interest in it, but, it was there, & curiosity got the better of me :) so i installed it, then opened it up, it was just a giff with BSOD :) quite funny really.....
but more seriously, i`m a firm believer in using what works best for "me" & unfortunately at the moment thats M$ not because it works better, or runs faster, or is more or less stable, because all the main competitors are very well polished & are equally professional (although my hat must tip very respectfully to many of the linux distro`s, after all, they are completely free) but nobody can really know any of the products, i could poke at apple for the way they keep an insanely tight leash on there products (not so much the Os, but the secondary hardware, ipods etc) they really want you to do it "there way" then theres the much maligned M$ for me XP`s the main Os at the moment, largely due to my familiarity with it, & more importantly, it`s the best supported, & is currently the only Os (bar none) that does everything i want it to, without hassle. vista will be excellent once it`s been cooking for another 12 months, since they basicaly took the good security aspects from Mac OsX & ported them into Vista (the every new proggy has to ask before installation etc) making it marginaly safer, for the average user, but still doesn`t run some of my important apps, tho games like UT3 that take advantage of DX10 look noticably better than when they are running in DX9 (not such a big hurrah tho, cos this is only M$ trying to force you to upgrade to vista, DX10 could run in XP if they let it grrr)
Mac OsX runs lovely, tho it seems to need far far more hard disc space than XP or even the Bloated Vista :/ (at least it does on my mac mini) but the media functions are superb, but made useless to me because the built in media suite can`t take codecs for my high def vids, & thats the one & only reason i run windows on my mac mini :( tho, to be truthfull, the mac mini runs windows superbly & with total stability, but thats why Mac OsX has such an excellent rep for stability, it`s not that the Os is more stable, it`s simply because Apple have almost COMPLETE controll over their hardware configurations, whilst Windows has literally millions of permutations to deal with. (& i list that as a plus point, i really do love apple hardware for the most part) & now that apple are running Intel chipsets, i can see them grabbing much larger portions of the average home market, especially if they can somehow manage to start bundling Bootloader pre installed with Windows.......... & yes, maybe that sounds like heresy & backward thinking, but it`s the best way to shift units & it introduces a massively wider audience to what Mac Os can do :)
phew, that turned into a big (& off topic) post rofl :) sorry about that, but i hope it made sense :)

I`ve been using WIndows XP for about 3 years and have not once experienced the BSOD or any `serious` errors.
Windows 98 was a different story completely.

Oh, you`ve said it now! You should have kept that quiet!
I used to get the blue screen quite a bit when I used Windows, so it`s no myth trust me. I dunno what was causing it, and I tried a load of different solutions but nothing seemed to fix it. I did a couple of clean installs, but each time something seemed not right, whether it was blue screens, long boot times, or other times when it would never switch off properly and just hang on the closing down screen.
Probably something to do with the disc....

Now have OSX running on my virtual machine - a little slow, but good for me to check it out without having to buy a Mac :D
