HI-DEF setup and playback queries...

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Friday, 31st August 2007, 21:35

I`ve got a Dell Ultra Sharp monitor running at 1600x1050 connected via a DVI lead. It this capable of handling hi-def video files? I`d guess so if the best hi-def content is 1080p...

If it can, do I need any software for playing back these hi-def files or will VLC or WMP be enough?

I don`t want to download a 8Gb file only to find out I can`t play it!

Any recommendations on good hi-def films that promote it well?

Cheers

To give you an Idea, my dads machine with a Athlon 2400 with ATI9500 G/Card plays HD files jerky. My Opteron Dual core with X800 plays them fine.

I either play them in VLC or WMP11 with an x264 codec installed, WMP11 seems to give slightly less CPU usage on my system. I`m not 100% if it was 1080p but it was atleast 1080i so give it a go if you`ve got a fairly up-to-date machine.

i use klites windows media player classic on my 1.66ghz mac mini (running XP)

vlc struggles with some hi def stuff, but wmpc plays them just fine. at 1080p the biggest file i downloaded was a direct bluray rip @ 29 gig. that played of as well, tbh the only file i ever had probs with was the nrth pole top gear special (8 gig version) but lots of peeps had the same trouble, so i suspect it was a faulty encode.

so if i can play them on a dual core 1.66ghz machine, with onboard intel graphics, you "should" be ok, as long as you gfx card has video acceleration (your does iirc) then you shouldn`t really have problems :/ if your only running VLC try the klite codc pack & use the built in media player, you don`t need to uninstall vlc, they run together fine :) heres a link

by pure coincidence, i just finished fixing a mates pc (why oh why do they have to install stuff that kills there pc`s grrrrr )

spec is.

Socket A XP2600
256ddr memory, minus 64meg for onboard (crappy) graphics
asrock k7s41gx mobo (cheap`n`cheerfull)
onboard sound/everything....

a 100meg sample of the sphere @ 1080p played ok untill there was a lot going on, then cpu time hit 100% & it jerked away, so really not pheasable to watch.

then tried a 100meg sample file of ghost ship @ 720p & it played perfectly, however, cpu still hit 85+%

now, tbh, because of the size of the whole files, i tend to get the 720p (average 4+gig against a min of 8gig+ for 1080) releases anyway, otherwise it`s nearly impossible to seed it all back, so ratio becomes unmanageable. & the 720p stuff is still normaly pretty amazing :)

but even so, i`m sure with a little tweaking the above system could be made able to play 1080p properly with very little expense. also gonna go test my sons 2.4ghz P4 shortly, i`ll let you know how that goes on :) it`ll be interesting to see the real minimum spec for 1080p, tbh, it`s not something i realy thought about before, i figured if a 1.66ghz mac mini could play it then anything could :/....

For the record my machine is a Core2 Duo 6400 2.13GHz with 2Gb RAM and a NVIDIA 7650 GS - basically ALDI`s last PC with a 1Gb upgrade.

When I posted I hadn`t even worried about PC performance for playing back files! I was more interested in knowing if my panel was good enough to display the files!

I`ve downloaded Amazon_720p and T2_1080 files from Microsoft and both play back fine. I`m currently downloading Starship Troopers 720p for my first HD film! :D

On a side note... I switched back to my SKY wireless router this morning and I`m now downloading at 846KBs - I can`t believe it! In the past I was only getting 200KBs through the wireless connection! :D :D :D

I didn`t mate - this account was setup years ago with an old email address.

Would you be able to send it to r8sso at hotmail dot com - hopefully it`s something good to do with downloads! :D

Cheers
