Page 1 of Best Broadband deal?

Hi.

I`m currently looking to switch to broadband (still on dial-up... :/ ), & I want to find a good deal.

I don`t want to pay too much, but I`m currently paying £15.99/month for dial-up. I`ll be using it for general surfing, but I suppose I`d want to do stuff I can`t do at the moment like download films, music etc. I don`t figure I`ll be downloading films all the time...just every now & then. Also, I`ve just got my self an Xbox 360, so I`d also like the online gaming availability (god knows why, I`m a s***e gamer!).

I am a Sky customer and I was going to go for one of their deals, but apparently it`s not available to me...even thought they keep sending me leaflets to take up their offer. Apparently, non of the cheaper options are available ( the free, £5 & £10 options) but they told my wife that we can pay £17/month & get broadband!!! I`m not sure I understand that! :/

I`ve had a browse on the broadband checker sites and the same old faces keep popping up, so I guess I`m just looking for a bit of advice.

hi,im with virginmedia but we have no cable where i live,but still got a good deal after many years with aol,time for a change,started at£17.99 package up to 8 meg speed,then joined bundle one for £2 extra we get anytime talk local and national phone calls inc upto an hour then hangup and redial,no more tesco talk bills which were up to £25 per quarter,anyway i thouht this was a good price ,also you get free pc guard inc firewall virus scan and spyware all from virgin and updates automatically,hope this helps you decide it does pay to shop around,regards peter.

Basically, If you are in a Cable area go for cable. Why? The Speed they advertise is the speed you will get. Fibre Optic see.. Unlike all the other providers who use copper wire technology. With that, the speed you get can vary dramatically depending on where you live, regardless of what the company says they offer. I used to get 0.9MB which dropped off 60 odd times a day with BT and I was paying for an 8MB service. Now with Virgin Cable I get a rock solid 10MB for a few pounds more. No contest.

Although cable isn`t always as good as it`s cracked up to be, as demonstrated by my speedy 10 meg connection:

That`s due to the capability of the server you`re downloading from, not cable not being as good as it`s cracked up to be.

Nice try, but I used to be able to download at 1.2mbps from the BBC on a consistent basis before Telewest f***ed things up on their last visit. If it was due to the server I`d always get s*** speed, but I don`t. Not sure if it`s a capacity issue in my area, or if the engineer screwed something, but I`ve had my connection for six years and know enough about these things to recognise when it is`t right.

Then it`s a fault, not an inherent problem with 10Mb connections not living up to their potential.

Get back on to them. Biggest problem I`ve had with Telewest was when my 512k connection used to die completely at 5pm on the dot every day and only start working again at 7am; they (eventually) fixed something actually in their box around the corner.
