Think I`ve got a codec problem?

Superted (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 5th December 2006, 08:46

Is there a program that will erase all the codecs from my computer, think i have a problem with them as video files will not play. Not sure what has caused it, only thing I can think of is I installed a demo version of nero 7 and it was about this time it all stoped working.

I`ve tried un-installing that nero 7, winamp, media player and divx player, restarting, then reinstalling without the nero and can now play divx and a couple of mpg`s but not all.

Also tried installing codec packs I found from searching through old threads on here but they havn`t worked either.

I think it is either going to be a re-format unless there is something that will remove all the codecs from the computer so I can re-install them.

All the best

Gerald.

This little gizmo will sniff out broken codecs.

Assuming you`re on XP have you tried a system restore to a point before the Nero demo?

Try VLC media player. I`ve never had to install a single codec myself - not even DVD stuff - VLC plays everything.

I gave the program a try but it did not detect any broken codecs.

Unfortunatly I have cleared out all the system restores while trying to free up some hard disk space. Did it before I realised I had a problem.

Thank you XFG, you have saved the day again :D

Winamp still does not work nor does media player so think a re-format will be needed but the player you recommended works perfectly, assume it must use its own codecs instead of the shared ones.

All the best
