Hi. i have got a pc upstairs on telewest and ive also got a laptop and i want to use wireless on the latop. So i have brought a d-link wirelss g kit dwl-922. Ive set it upstairs but it keeps asking for a password and ive put the password that we got when we setup broadband an it doesnt work! I downloaded the drivers from there website put that on and i works but it says that the signal strength is low but its using a wireless conection using NETGEAR not D-LINK. When i try to use d-link it will not let me on the internet but it will do with netgear?

Sounds like you are connecting to a neighbour`s unsecured Netgear router!

Could you explain a little more regarding when you are asked for a password, as it could be one of several things.

Password for the actual broadband connection.
Password to access the control interface of the router/AP.
Password for the actual wireless link.

loading software for a router?

normally you just connect to one of the router`s LAN ports with ethernet
and then enter the router IP to connect to the web based interface.
you`re normally prompted for a username & password at this stage.
these are supplied with the documentation that comes with the router.

You got any mates that are PC savvy? Get them to come and have a quick look.

Like someone said above, you shouldn`t need to install any software for the router. Just plug it in and use the wizard to set it all up.

Have you unticked the "My ISP requires a password for me to connect" box in Router Admin?

Cheers

Nick

Right, I`ve had two bottles of wine so this might be crap, but here goes... You don`t need a password for Telewest. Sounds like it`s asking for the router password, but hard to tell from what you`ve written. Basically, start from scratch and do the following:

Connect the router to your cable modem upstairs using the supplied (presumably) cable. You want to plug into the modem into the WAN port of the router. Use the router`s config page to set the parameters of the wireless network. The admin page can usually be accessed with the IP address of 192.168.1.1, but occasionally this will be different. It will be in the manual if it is different.

In the wireless part of the router`s set-up pages, give your wireless network an SSID (anything you want). To keep things simple, use the wireless zero configuration on XP to connect to the unsecured network that you just created. When this is done, you should create a network key (using either WEP or WPA) in the router`s admin page, then assign the same key on the laptop. After this is done and you can still connect, stop broadcasting your SSID in the router`s admin page, as this will stop other people from seeing your network.

Sometimes I wish I had a helpline, as these things are often very easy to explain over the phone, but not so in word on forums...

Ive got it working now. But is this wireless router a slow one it only transfers at 54mps would it be worth me getting a faster speed one.

Also what is the best anti - virus, firewall and pop up blocker for the laptop?

IMO the short answer is no unless your internet connection is faster than 54Mps.

Your wired connection to the router will be faster than wireless (unless your using a slow 10Mps NIC) at 100Mps, but your still throttled by the comparative lower speed of the service provider.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.
