Firewire enclosure for DVD-Writer - Trying to find a good one.

bytemaster (Elite) posted this on Monday, 16th October 2006, 19:18

I am looking for a decent Firewire enclosure for DVD-Writer, either just Firewire or combo with USB. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I use this one:

Its not firewire though. USB2 should be a sufficient speed though for even a 16x DVD writer (16x = 23.4MB per second...USB2 = 480Mbps = 60MB per second approx)

Firewire peripherals are hard to get hold of because, as miles said, USB 2.0 can match and in come cases better its maximum theoretical throughput and USB is far, far more ubiquitous.

If you can, go USB rather than firewire. I even use USB for DV capture, even though Ive got a firewire port on my Mobo.

Firewire actually has significant advantages, the 400 vs 480 is about as helpful as saying 802-11g has a throughput of 54mbps.

The protocol differences between the two standards mean that you should expect real-world throughput to be higher using Firewire (400), and with significantly less CPU usage.

I have researched on various DVD burning forums and the overwhelming evidence is that Firewire has the edge. I am just trying to see if anyone has successfully used a UK sourced enclosure.

Evidence suggests that USB is maxed out at 27MBs whereas Firewire is good for 35MBs.

Does anyone actually achieve solid 16x Burns via USB, without throttling or `BurnProof` intervention?

I hear what you`re saying bytemaster, and agree about the consistency rates of USB vs Firewire.

However, for DVD writing...if the current max is 16x (I think Samsung actually manage 18x but anyway)...and 16x is 23.5MB per second, then USB is maxed out at 27MB per second...then (in theory ;)) it should be fine.

Anyway, I understand your concerns over it...and I can only comment on 8x burning via USB2 (doesn`t appear to use the buffer under-run/burn-proof features).

Good luck with it.

27MBs vs 23.5MBs doesn`t leave a lot of head-room.

I can get 8x over USB2 without problems, but when I try at 12x then the under-run protection will kick in. I believe that 12x should be achievable, but Firewire should give 16x without too much trouble.

The only problem is that some of the FW chipsets are not very good with Opticals, which is why I was hoping to find a recommendation.

splinter - thanks for the link, unfortunately I can only see 2.5 and 3.5 enclosures - I have emailed them re 5.25s

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, I was really hoping to find someone who is successfully running such kit.
