Page 1 of landline phones

ive got a few questions i hope can be answered. we went out today to change our house phone. we had a few in mind but when we asked a few questions in the shop we didnt get a straight answer, so we never bought one.

my parents want one with a display so they can see who is calling, we have been getting a few calls from call centers etc lately so it would be good to see who is calling before answering. i was under the impression that if the phone had names and numbers feature then when you type the name in with the number when that person rang their name showed up. but the staff in the shop we went to kept on going on about caller ID and how you have to pay extra to be able to see who`s calling.

also we want one with an answering machine built in .we used to use 1571 but found for what we were paying it just wasent worth it. but again we were told you had to pay extra. again i would have thought that if the answer machine part was in the phone then you wouldnt need to pay.

finally the option to call from say a mobile to see if you have any messages, remote access i think it was called. is this something we need to pay for?

so we came away not sure. we want to get the phone as soon as we can so any help would be appreciated.

I don`t pay for caller ID. BT used to charge for it but I signed up for free, and I am only on the basic minimum package. The basic 1571 service is also free but I don`t know whether that gives you remote access.

The free caller ID is a bit hidden, but I found it.

just checked the link. does that mean if we sign up for that, as long as we make 6 i think it said, chargable calls over the quater then the caller id is free? we ring my brother on his mobile, would that count as a paid call, i guess they mean calls outside of your call package?

just looked as well at BT answer 1571, is this free too? as i said we used to have this last year i think, or its equivalent, but it seemed to cost us a bit so we stopped it, and it wasent reliable, this could mean we dont need a phone with an answer phone built in which would help, as my parents would be the ones who use it most.

i know what you mean about hidden away, i guess thats there plan, as the majority wouldnt even find it yet they would say it is there.

Register with the telephone preference service to stop the call center calls. I have our land line, and mobiles registered and any call we get are reported to the TPS and the information commisioners office.

Bt Privacy is free too, Bt Privacy is Free Caller display and Telephone Preference Scheme subscription. Remember that the TPS needs to be re subscribed to every 6 months.
