External hard drive/ Mediaplayer?

1mills (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 16th May 2006, 11:56

I`ve been looking at one of these

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=19081547630&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X3NwZWNpZmljYXRpb25z&product_uid=104084

But I was wondering if there were any other options out there?

I remember I was looking a while back at one of these and a few others but can`t for the life of me find anything (having trouble with actual description :( ) I`m sure I found a few different kinds on Ebuyer last time, but this is the only one I can really find at the moment.

The main feature I want is the ability to play back through my TV, which will save me having to burn episodes of shows onto CD to watch.

Any advice on where to look or what other options there are would be much appreciated, I`m not very exactly techno whizzkid :/

I don`t know much about these streaming media players but you can try looking at Pinnacle`s 200 and also one made by DLink but I can`t remember the model number. Sorry, that`s all the input I can add to this topic.

I have one of these:

cgi.ebay.co.uk/DIVX-MP4-MP3-DVD-MOVIE-MULTIMEDIA-AV-HDD-PLAYER-HD4_W0QQitemZ9726998644QQcategoryZ15055QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

It`s fantastic. That price is just for the caddy, which takes up to an 80gb 2.5inch (laptop) harddrive. You need to add your own drive - get one from Ebuyer for around £50. It`s very small and portable and I haven`t found anything it won`t play yet! Great for watching Lost etc... ;)

At least 3 of my friends have bought them too after seeing my one and they`re all happy.

N.B. I bought mine from an Ebay shop called "Direct GT" but I couldn`t find it again - probably didn`t search hard enough! Feedback on the above seller looks OK.

*Edit* Found the shop I bought from - quick delivery :D

Hi

Also have a look at the site www.aria.co.uk they sometimes have simular items.I have the [freecom ]network media kit 80 gig from SVP a while ago with a free drive at about £125.
It works fine no real problems as long as you dont try too higher picture quality then it may only work via the computer.I use the slyfox mobile dvd program to convert to divx for the machine as none of the other free ways seemed to work. And i use the default option in the program. [ 2 versions out now and while i have both not yet tried the beta with the faster converting ].I would if buying now look at the newer ones with the 2.5 inch drives as the machine will be alot smaller and lighter and may work out cheaper depending on the size drive you want.

bye

Cheers for the input, I think my based on my current funds situation (Season ticket is due this month :( ) I`ll probably go for one of those Caddy`s from Ebay. It will save the credit cards a bit of punishment aswell ;)

One question JulesBloke, can you organise a playlist on it?

One of the other reasons I want one is for playing my music through (I currently have everything on my computer which is set up to my amp) but if people are round for BRBQ or something the computer`s a bit to far away to have the music on without getting complaints. So it would be handy if I could set up playlists.

To be honest, I only use it to watch downloaded TV. It displays a windows explorer like menu on the TV screen, you can highlight which folder or file you want to watch and it starts playing. It will then play through all the other files in the folder in order until it reaches the end, and will start again at the first file in the folder.

You can probably (and I haven`t tested it) organise your music into different folders on the drive, then skip to the next folder with the remote, where it`ll play all the songs contained in it.
