how do you uninstall win fixer? and other jobbies

dakwah (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 5th April 2006, 16:23

sister in law downloaded this and it asks for money which she didn`t want to pay.But it won`t uninstall using its uninstaller or through control panel. Help?

Also in order to connect to broadband she has to press the speedtouch (I think) to connect before internet explorer button. It won`t do it with internet explorer only like I can. Finally her dial-up window opens up first asking if she wants to connect (old isp), but of course don`t need to with broadband. How can I disable it?

thanks

Winfixer again. From memory soming about a site called "command - keeping software free" The work laptop I cleaned up was being "infected" with viruses via some malware.

For a simple user, download ad-aware (www.lavasoft.com), and update it / run it.

Windows defender also works to remove these nasties, but best to use 2 seperate products like ad-aware and MS defender. Spybot search and destroy also comes to mind.

WinFixer is NOT a spyware removal program. It IS Spyware and I suspect it`s one of the many popups that appears when the Messenger service is not enabled. It usually appears with a message like "Your PC has been infected with spyware please download", etc. Easiest way to get rid of it is to reinstall the OS and all programs on the PC unfortunately.

To connect with ISP she needs to right click IE icon, properties, connection, Setup, Connect to the internet and follow the instructions there. It should be documented with the details given upon signing up to the ISP.

Think a mate got rid of this using Spy Doctor. Never used it personally so I cant vouch for how good it is.

Personally, the one PC I tried to fix that had it was summarily wiped

Do you not mean Spyware Doctor? SpyDoctor is questionable and is widely suspected to be spyware itself. As for Spyware Doctor, it does NOT remove WinFixer.

WinFixer is notorious for popping up when people visit various unsavoury sites and it is intended to fool many users by claiming their PCs have spyware. Well, it cannot possibly know whether a PC has spyware or not when it hasn`t even performed a search on the hard disc.

So how did you fix it?

SpyDoctor it is. Only program I`ve known to get rid of Winfixer... which is why I`ve always been a bit suspicious of it.

I formatted the hard-disk and started from scratch. This thing was downloading viruses and trojans like there was no tomorrow
