Quick wireless nnetworking question

WelshTom (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 8th February 2006, 12:04

Hi there,

I have a wireless network set up at home run besides my wired network. iT consists of a wirless router/adsl modem with 4 ports, with pc`s on 2 of the ports. My brother lives in the same house as me and has a pc and an xbox in his room and would like to connect them to the rest of the network. Can`t really be bothered with running a wire so wirless it is. One option is to buy 2 wireless bridges, but thats expensive so I was wondering if I would be able to use a cheap 4 port wireless router? So basically my question is, can I have 2 wireless routers on the same network?

So

(xbox & pc) - router 1 ------ wireless connection ------ router 2 - (pc & pc)

Hope that kinda makes sense!

Thanks

wt

do you want to connect the second router wirelessly to the first and
have the xbox and pc wired into it?

not too sure if you`ll be able to do that tbh. you would be able to connect
router to router via ethernet and have the second router act as a switch (as
long as you can enable access point mode), but i don`t think it`s possible to
connect the two routers wirelessly unless you could disable DHCP on the second
and issue manually set IP addresses to the xbox and pc?

someone else may shed a bit more light on this subject?

Amazon have got wireless USB dongles for a tenner at the moment (thanks to the BB forum for the heads up).

I ordered one for myself, but it hasnt got here yet. For a tenner you cant go wrong, really. A few of those will certainly be cheaper than a wireless router.
