ADSL filters - I`m puzzled

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 21st May 2005, 19:18

This is what`s puzzling me.

I originally set up the filters as follows.

Microfilter plugged into BT master socket and a plug in extension cable plugged into the microfilter. The extension cable routes to PC installation upstairs where a faceplate splitter/filter is fitted. The master socket hasn`t got a phone plugged in, but there is an extension to the living room, hardwired from the rear of the master socket. When setting up broadband with this configuration, the ADSL line wouldn`t connect, so I removed the microfilter from the BT master socket, leaving just the plug in extension to upstairs and bingo, everything works. What I don`t understand is why I don`t get a connection with the microfilter plugged into the master socket. As I understand it, the ADSL signal is unfiltered and therefore I wouldn`t be filtering it twice (once at the master socket and once at the PC input upstairs. Has anyone got any ideas please. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you were trying to filter the phone line twice, once at each end. If you`ve filtered out the adsl signal at the master socket all that the extension cable is going to take to the computer is the phone signal(assuming that you have the extension plugged into the phone side of the splitter).

What you did was right, now it is left to the splitter at the end of the extension to do the splitting of the 2 signals. Also you should have a ADSL splitter plugged into the living room extension, if you haven`t already, as that signal is most likely unfiltered - as it comes from the rear of the master socket.

Thanks. So does that mean that if I were to have the BT master socket replaced with a pre-filtered one, I would be unable to use ADSL anywhere other than at the master socket ? :/

if u are taking ur incoming wires and connecting them directly to the rear of the pre filtered faceplate then all ur outgoing signals from the FRONT of this plate will be pre split and will not require another filter, the issue comes when u hard wire ur extension from the rear of the plate to a second ( or third ) plate, am sure these plates will need to be pre-filtered to ensure a decent connection to prevent cross talk and noise.
