Can standard CD players play .WAV files ?

Fitz (Elite) posted this on Monday, 11th April 2005, 09:15

Like the heading says. I`ve recorded an audio file in .WAV format and attempted to burn it to a CD-R, with Nero but it won`t playback on my CD player. Any advice would be appreciated please. Thanks

Should play it back. Did you pick "Audio Disc" in the burn options?

did you click `create Audio CD` in nero? If not thats your problem. If you did your CD/CD player is forked (or wont play CD-Rs).

Contrary to popular belief, wavs arent the native format for cds, so just burning them straight onto a data cd wont get you anywhere, im afraid.

Thanks for replies. I thought I used Audio CD, but really can`t remember. Will have another go & see what happens. The player I tried it on is quite elderly, so maybe that`s another factor.

The problem may be the media rather than the method you used to burn the tracks - some older CD players cannot handle CD-R which use different dyes to standard audio CDs.

Success on the second attempt. Must have been pressing the wrong buttons - which is what my wife is always telling me. :D

Yep, if you don`t burn .wav files as an audio CD, you just get a data disc that CD players can`t read-When you burn as `audio Cd` it adds a `CD-DA` tag to the .wav files which allows the Cdplayer to recognise and play them.

Now, next bit-when you burn audio, most programs will put a 2 second gap by default between songs. This isn`t so bad if you are making up a compilation of various songs, but if you are making a copy of a full album or (even worse) a live recording, you don`t want these additional gaps otherwise it` breaks up the music . So, when you burn audio, if your recording software gives you he option ALWAYS burn using `Disc At Once` option.

If you are using Nero, then as well as choosing disc at once, when you`ve got all the tracks lined up in the burn window (That`s the left hand side in Nero Burning Rom) highlight all the tracks EXCEPT TRACK 1, right click and choose properties and change the Pause under `Track Properties` to zero Do that every time you burn and you`ll get discs sounding just right

Yeah, thanks Emily, that`s exactly what happened first time round. And all I was trying to do was to record a bit of voice from tape to CD. Still, got there in the end thanks to you guys. :)
