Asked this once before but didn`t get any responses, so: is this software any good at tackling copy protected DVDs (like, if I want to back up a few films I own to take out in the road with me, etc).

Never heard off it .
Personally , I would use drdivx for dvd - divx encoding
If you are cpying protected dvd`s , then you need to download anydvd and leave it running in the background.
