One last stupid question before the end of the year (backing up data)!

Ascomdog (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 26th December 2004, 12:12

I`ve been running XP for approx. 8 months, but I have never backed-up any data. :( When I go into the back up your data option I then get the back up your files & data option.

If I select that option and click `next`, I then get the what do you want to back up? options, of which there are four.

1. My documents and settings
2. Everyone`s documents and settings
3. All information on this computer
4. Let me choose what to back up

Am I correct in thinking I should choose 3. All information on this computer, which can be used in case of a major Windows failure? If so, how do I go about doing this? What should I create the back up to, should it be floppy`s, & if so...how many would I need? I`d imagine that it would take forever?

Can you back up to recordable dvd etc? But, if I choose to back up all information, would it try to create an exact like-for-like copy of the system...eg: the same size ect? Again, wouldn`t that take aeons & numerous discs?

When I try to back up 3. All information on this computer, I get an error message which reads `The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. The operation was aborted`.

I`m sure this was a lot easier on Win 98 SE!!!

tbh, i just tend to backup stuff directly to a blank dvd`r rather than go through the windows backup process, although i recently had to format my main drive because of a virus :( and lost a load of stuff, so i`d do it sooner rather than later.

If you want to backup your computer, because you may have a computer failure at some points, you. you will want a piece of software call (Norton Ghost) I use Norton Ghost 2003. This will allow you to backup what ever you want on your computer. Lets just say you got a virus on half, of your computer, and files were corrupted that's a big job to fix yeah, well if you used Norton Ghost 2003 and you backed up a (Partition) all you would need to do is reboot the computer but the ghost image in you made, boot off the DVD and follow on screen prompts. About 40min later everything would be back to normal from where you made that image.

Hey Ogs.

Ooer, missus!

I did it the cheap way, just backed-up to dvd-r, as per your suggestion. I do like the sound of the `ghost` idea, but I`ll look into that in the new year when I have some cash.
