DAB receiver for PC

Reckless (Competent) posted this on Tuesday, 2nd November 2004, 00:00

I`m after one (DAB-T for Freeview channels only) for the kids PC for Xmas. Anyone got one? If you have what make/model is it and (importantly) do you rate it?

TIA!

I have the Twinhan VisionDTV-USB and it works very well. You can also get it as a PCI card. The USB box version is very small (about the size of a cigarette package) and is powered from the PC. It records to the hard drive, the files created are exactly as transmitted so the quality is extremely high and these files can be transferred to DVD if required, and as it supports the new 7 day EPG it is very easy to set. You do need to connect through USB2 for maximum quality (picture may become jerky due to data loss on USB1.1). The price is £66 from Specialtech.co.uk.

Nice spot, thanks Mike. Just bought the TwinHan and v impressed for the money.
Great that it it`s self-powered from USB port and the size of a cigarette packet!
It even comes with a small antenna if you don`t have an external aerial. Recording quality
is very good indeed.

Cheers

The only thing I would add is to make sure you download the latest software/drivers from here (it`s a bit slow!) as it seems to fix a few problems.

Also, has anyone successfully used this device with any 3rd party TV viewing s/w?

Yes, that`s the one. I found that the original s/w named the channels incorrectly or not at all, whereas the later version downloaded from their website seems to name them correctly.

I even did some timed recordings at the weekend which worked faultlessly and the quality of the recordings is excellent.

I updated to the latest software but then reverted to version 2.422 (later than that supplied on CD) because I discovered the CPU usage was much higher. The later software versions mainly add correction for daylight saving time on the EPG and should be more stable. Negatives are the remote control does not function - seems to be disabled in the software and also the signal strength and quality indicators do not work.

Mike you need to enable the remote in adjustments (options tab) :)

You can also change how much CPU usage is used :)

Off now to watch Little Britain on BBC 3 :)
