DVD-RW not recognising any disks after re-install

Help!

Yet more probs with the Tiny XP3000 media centre

Had been backing up loads of discs with DVD shrink, no problem, then message started coming up "your DVDRW does not support this kind of disc - please insert other recordable media" or some such. I had not changed the types of discs I had been using, but since getting the message tried 3 different brands of blanks.

Moreso, when I try to play a standard DVD in the RW drive, it isnt being recognised.
When I goto "My computer", the drive is showing, but when you double click on it (with a DVD inserted), nothing happens - it doesnt seem to be reading it.

I used the Reload disc to restore to factory settings - lost a load of files, because I couldnt burn them to anything - but the same things happening.

Any thoughts?

I had a similar problem, but only the fact my autorun had switched itself off.
Got the registry settings off the MS site (just key Autorun into the search) and it might be able to help you with this, especially if the drive has loaded an incompatible disc into it`s memory and won`t accept the new discs as "new"

Try a CD. Easiest media for a DVD drive to read (original audio, not a CDR) and this might show if the drive has gone faulty.

Although, by running it`s master discs, I would have expected it to have reset the above....

Oh..and just realised...if it`s the same drive you ran the master CD on, try burning a CDR...sounds like the DVD laser(s) may have failed.

Jimbo,

The drive *will* accept a prerecorded CD,

When you load any of these : a CDR, blank DVD, shop bought DVD, homemade DVD or DVDR, nothing happens. If I go to my computer > DVDRW drive (which actually just says CD Drive > Open (or whatever), nothing comes up (where it should show the contents)

Rightclicking on the Properties of the drive, then "Hardware" states that "This device is working properly"!!

I want to try the autorun thing but went to the MS site, typed autorun into the search and what came up was a bit gobbledeygook to me (Im still a bit of a newbie when it comes to troubleshooting etc).

Can you be a bit more specific as to what I have to do to enable Autorun?

(Also, I ran the Backup disk on the DVD drive, which is seperate to the RW drive)

Much appreciated

Porl

I`m crap on software too, but the "gobbledegook" that comes up on MS is dead easy to follow, just do it step by step and only change what it says.

To be honest, this doesn`t sound like an autorun problem, cause that can usually be cured with a reboot...but come to think of it, try this:

Load a PRERECORDED DVD disc into the RW drive and restart the PC.
Now that it has restarted, go to the RW drive and see if it has a disc in there. If not, sounds like the drive is gubbed and requires replacement.
Also, it might be a driver problem, go to reinsatall it`s driver and roll back to the last one installed to see if that cures it.

you haven`t done any driver or firmware updates on it recently have you?

at work now so havent been able to try any of the suggestions.

I did manage to get it to accept a prerecorded dvd which was inserted before starting up.
It shows it as being in the drive, and Powerdvd kicks in fine.

A system and drivers disk came with the PC but I cant find a RW drive on there (but thats probably me being thick - how else might I reinstall its driver though?

Havent done any driver or firmware updates to my knowledge.

Dependant on how new the drive is, might be the software not recognising it (my Nero 5.10 didn`t see the pioneer 108, had to up it to Nero 6)

Also, might be the ASPi layer thing, available from Adaptec (cures zillions of drive problems that little baby)
But if you loaded a disc and it worked from startup, definitely sounds like autorun is off. Same thing happened to mine right out of the blue and I still dunno why!

Jimbo,

Im trying to do the autorun thing but I cant figure out where to start - I typed in "autorun" on the MS site but loads of results come up and they are mainly about how to disable it - what am I doing wrong??

Wierd...I can`t find it now either!
If you right click the offending drive and select "troubleshoot" there`s a couple of things in there might help, a hotfix and summat else, but dunno.

When I looked I got a "how to" change a registry key value, did that and mine has been fine since...wish I could remember the exact path/sequence :(

went all the way through the troubleshoot to no avail.

went to online help and it suggested that SP2 might fix the problem, but update not available til 3am (or something).

Forgot to try the adaptec update. Was just gonna ring Tiny Support tomorrow and get ripped off (what a p***er that the "help"desk is only open Mon - Fri 9-6, my working hours, so I cant try out any suggestions they might give!).

Someone also suggested uninstalling the driver through the divice manager, then rebooting and letting Windows find and reinstall it after start up - this didnt change anything either.....

Have cleaned it with a CD cleaner and that didnt work.

Will try again tomorrow night. The PC is at my parents (15 miles away) so Im just having to nip back and play around with it when I can.
