My DVD Writer NEC ND 1000A doesn`t write or read CD`s (it just clicks a few times and stops!!)
My DVD Writer NEC ND 1000A still doesn`t write or read CD`s (it just clicks a few times and stops!!) however it still works OK for DVD`s.
The drive is only 18 months old but has got noisier in the last few months. Could it just be dying!!
Any ideas?

I`d say it`s FUBAR mate. I had an ASUS DVD writer (rebadged Pioneer 105) that did the same. Just stopped reading media and clicked a lot. I spent five months trying to get an RMA from ASUS, but in the end they simply stopped replying to me. It makes my blood boil that such a big company don`t have a UK service centre (only a laptop centre) to handle these things. They sent me round the houses, through the distribution chain, and even after promising (eventually) to send me a replacement drive, I got nothing. Drive is now out of warrantee, so not chance of a replacement.
Unfortunately I`d say you`re in the same boat, as it`s 18 months old. Not very nice news, but these things usually only have a 12-month warrantee...

I had a similar problem - do you have software such as AnyDVD loaded - I had downloaded the latest copy and it hadnt loaded properly - brought all my dvds to a standstill.
Downloaded again and fine.

I`ve pm`d you this as well, figured i`d post it as well....
hi buddy, righto, unfortunatly the problems are a bit different, bravesoul was having probs with software rather than hardware, where as you`re probs seem to be hardware driven, usually if a dvd drive is begining to fail, the first thing to have probs is the cd-r reading/writing then over time, the unit will have more & more problems untill it completely dies, you can try removing the drive (completly) then re-installing it, as odd as it sounds, this ocasionaly works, same idea as "giving it a kick" but it`s equaly (sp) likely to make it totaly fubar, you`re best options are A.spend £45 (ish) on a new dvd burner, or B. just use the dvd for burninhg dvd`s & get a cd-re-writer for cd`s £20ish (this could extend the life of the current device for a good while before it dies)
hope this helps.
