dropped files when capturing mini dv

cirdan (Elite) posted this on Friday, 3rd September 2004, 02:13

just started capturing some footage using premiere. when i capture, everytime i get several dropped frames. i wasent sure if this would be a big problem so i started editing and when i played back what id done it jumps quite badly.

when i watch the footage from the camera it all seems fine, is there something i should be doing on premiere before i capture, maybe some options i need to change. i dont want to do anymore till i know if im going wrong otherwise it will just be a waste of time.

cheers.

Have you got much running in the background? what specs have you got?
I find closing as many progs/services as you can that you dont need helps, but so does having a decent system, but I just got a dv camcorder, and i`ve captured a few vids using vegas 5.0 (amazing program) and not had a single dropped frame. How are you capturing the video? i`m using usb from cam to pc

Can you repeat the problem? Have you defragged the harddrive? Close all unecessary programs etc. and tried again?

It could be the harddrive you`re using might not be up to the job so it might be dropping frames as it captures. I had this same problem on an old harddrive and bought a new one. I`ve had no problems since.

ive got 512ram 2.6 athlon processor. i just recently changed from win98, i know! to me, the only upgrade i could get hold of. the hard drive is 40gb.

ive been using the mini dv for a few months but only just started to try and edit. i am using a firewire card via a lead straight into the camcorder. ive tried using adobe prem to capture but i was getting around 5-10 dropped frames each time i captured, that ranged from 10 seconds of footage up to a minute or so. i even used the free software that is on me this seemed ok but when i played it back the quality wasent that good..

the tapes are fine and the footage seems ok, ive watched it on the tv and played it back many times.

as i say i used the captured film on premiere and when i tried to play back a finished edit it was quite jumpy.

Most likely the harddrive is the slow part of the chain not picking up all the captured footage. Have you defragged it? If it`s still a problem, could you borrow/beg/steal another HD to try?

Doesn`t that affect the capture quality ? pretty sure that usb cannot handle capturing at DV quality and firewire is better option.

No capturing from cam to usb is a lot better than i would have thought, no dropped frames, and picture quality doesn`t seem to be unnafected. Using usb2.0 though. Am toying with getting the firewire cable for it though, then i can dump it straight onto my Panasonic dmr-hs2 dvd recorder :D

the hard drive aint that old, 5months or so. i only just re formatted and only have around 6gb worth of stuff on it, i dont think defraggin would do all that much. i got firewire because i was told and i read that it was the better option.

ill try with some other software, and post back. its a bit annoying. i thought id just hook the camera to the pc and capture then edit, didnt think id have problems capturing. as i say i havent exactly got a great pc but i thought it would do for some simple editing.

i am still having problems with dropped frames, sometimes quite a few. i have used other software to capture, changed the various settings for capture.

i know the tapes and actual footage is ok. one suggestion was the hard drive. i havent got another i can try, my old one had some bad problems which is why i had to change it and it doesnt work. could it be anything to do with graphics card. my current one isnt that good, infact my older one is probably better, i havent changed it because its ok for what i need, is it worth putting my older ard back in, or wouldnt that be anything to do with it?
