skirpy (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 24th August 2004, 06:52

Hello, i have just installed a second hard drive as a slave on my PC and i notice it takes a little while now to boot up.

Is this normal?

Thanks for any help.

Normal? whats normal? yeah, probably about right...the more drives
you add the longer the boot process due to the bios checking things....plus
extra power comsumption......

Sort of staying on the subject.
I have a friend who wants to install a second HDD and run it as a slave but he wants to install Win 98 on it as well as on the master drive.
Would this cause problems ?

Hi,

wouldn`t have thought it would be a problem as long as it is set to SLAVE, so that
the OS does`nt try to load from the second drive....

why the need for two drives containing the same OS? is he/she trying to create
some sort of redundancy like RAID?

Probably. In my experience, Win98 (unlike XP) doesn`t like being installed on anything other than the primary master drive, and having two instances of it on separate drives could cause no end of problems.

Your friend would probably have to fit the second drive as a primary master to begin with, in order to install a new copy of 98. It may then be possible to slave it to the original drive and use some sort of boot manager to choose between the two.

Don`t quite understand why you`d do that anyway. Does your mate know his stuff and wants a weird dual boots setup? Or is he concerned that he wants the second drive to work with his current system?

If it`s the latter, all he has to do is format the drive. No need to install an OS. Once it`s formatted, it will show up as a new drive in WIndows 98 that he can use as normal.

The other thing to remember is that if you have two HDs in a master/slave config, they will only operate at the speed of the slower drive ...

Eg. Master: 133 UDMA + Slave: 100 UDMA means they will both run at 100.

Sorry, but that`s completely wrong. The drives should be able to operate independently at their rated speeds - if they can`t, then there`s something wrong with the setup.
