Wireless Modem for my laptop

gorilla (Harmless) posted this on Friday, 16th July 2004, 10:37

I have a laptop and would like to use a wireless modem for my broadband connection. I do not have another pc in the house.
My question is, if I simple buy something like this, will that work as a replacement for my USB speedtouch modem? I have read lots of info on home networking and a few threads on here, but they all refer to multiplt set ups which I don`t have.

(It`s an emachines laptop from dixons if the link doesn`t work.)

Yes is the answer.

The ADSL Modem Routers basically do all the Internet connecting for you. You then connect to them via the network (either cables or wirelessly) - and when you make requests to go on the internet, e.g. www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk ;) then it will forward your request to the router which makes the connection etc. etc.

It also means that if you were to get another PC in the house then that could also use the same Internet connection.

I personally would buy something like the Netgear model. It has a built-in firewall which is easy to use, and I`ve never had any problems with mine. Actually I think Dabs.com are doing it on special this week with a free PCMCIA card for the laptop.

Check out www.adslguide.org.uk for reviews of various ADSL Modem Routers

Thanks MilesR.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. I think the Netgear model is the one to go for. It seems to rate quite highly on various sites.

I`ve got the netgear one and it`s excellent. You`ll need to buy a card for your laptop unless it has wireless built in.

For anyone who has the Netgear Router, I noticed there is another firmware update for it, to version 1.05, supposed to correct a few bugs, and there is one for the PCMCIA card too.

Just installed it on mine.

All the best

Ger.
