Gmail Questions

xfg (Elite Donator) posted this on Thursday, 24th June 2004, 22:17

1) If I use the Ad-Block feature in Firefox to block the ad iframe in my gmail account can they know? Too lazy to find out if blocking ads breaches the Ts&Cs (I assume it would) - but can they find out?

2) Also anyone want a gmail account invite? I have a spare. (not anymore)

Gmail?, tell me more. Not much info on their site other than it`s beta testing at the moment.

Sam.

[Edit] Mega storage, email on it`s way :) [Edit]

1gb of email storage goodness, no (graphical) ads, email stored in "conversations" and you get to feel all elite when you finally get your mitts on an account. :D

All I have in mine so far is this week`s PopBitch as am too lazy to go to all the sites I ever used and change my email addy in my account on them! :)

Edited to add: Check your Bulk Mail folder as that`s where my invite ended up.

How do you get these invites in the first place? Is it a Kevin Bacon thing (you know someone who knows someone who... etc etc... knows someone who works at Google), or did you just e-mail Google and say "I wanna be a beta tester!"

Wouldn`t mind giving this G-Mail thing a try myself... if someone gives me an account, I`ll try and answer your iframe question. :D

`Fraid I dont know the answer to the iframe question, but I can answer Mikes question. Initially Google started with people who had been active on their blogger site within a couple of months of gmail going into beta, that was about 6 weeks back now, and I was lucky enough to get in at that stage. Since then they have given users invitations so that we can invite more people to come test out the system. Initially it was like 2 invites in 3 weeks, but they seem to be speeding up now.

I`m afraid I have given out all three invites now Mike, but email me, and when I get another I will send it to you.

To the three people who emailed me, I have sent the invites, but if it is going to a hotmail account then you need to check your spam settings, as there are reports of hotmail blocking the invite or moving it to your spam folders!

My invite came straight through to my inbox. I heard about the filtering of invites, but MS must have removed tham after the backlash.

Now im all registered and loving my mighty 1GB of storage! w00t!

And you say Google periodically furnish you with invites? I was half expecting some when i registered.

What im listening to (if youre interested)

Yep, depends on how their testing is going, I invited a mate last week, and the next day he had 6 invites of his own! Then you can go a week without an invite at all!

Ah, I see - it makes sense that they`d want to "grow" it gradually during the beta test, instead of having a huge rush of people trying to register at once.

Anyway, cheers Tom - YGM! ;)
