broadband speed

pop dog (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 14th April 2004, 22:27

Had 512 from Freeserve for a year and have just changed over to Telewest 512 cable.
What speeds should I now get from this connection???

My freeserve speed was usualy good, had 480 last week when I checked but have only got 430 from my new cable connection tonight.

If you beleve what we are told, then my cable connection should be faster on average than my phone line connection (line not sheared) Is this true? what speeds are you cable users getting?? I was expecting close to 500.

thanks
Grant

Batavia - whilst it`s sold as 576 (and may appear in Windows as that connection speed) - the true speed may be a little bit lower. Basically it`s the highest possible/achievable speed.

I have the Pipex 512kbit/s connection also, and get around the 490 mark.
Try out the speed test websites e.g. www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
That should give you a better indication of the speed you actually get (up & down stream)

it could also have something to do with the fact that if there are more blueyonder broadband users in your local area then your share of the broadband "pie" is reduced. ie - if you are the only one using the local node thingy then you get 100% of the bandwidth - if there are 100 users in the local area connecting to the same node widgety doodah then you get a bit less. User to Bandwidth ratios and all of that gubbins...

I`m sure the more techy people here will know the technical term for this...my brain no worky. bleh.

Another Blueyonder 512 to compare:

Downstream 405 Kbps (50.6 KB/sec) 437 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 113 Kbps (14.1 KB/sec) 122 Kbps (inc. overheads)

I`ve got some programs connected to the Internet that I didn`t want to disconnect, so the connection *can* do a bit better.
