PC programme transfer .
I have ordered a new pc from dell and would like to transfer some of my existing programmes and files to the new computer from my old one .
At the moment I have windows me and the new pc will have xp home . Has anyone any advise how I connect the two pc together to transfer and how to transfer . thanks .
RE: PC programme transfer .
If Both have a network adaptor then simply connect both via an ethernet cable and move the files across, XP will make it deaad easy for you :)
You`ll need to re-install any programmes, but XP includes a file and settings transfer wizard that should make it simple to transfer things like your e-mail (although you`ll need to re-enter your password) and documents.
You need a floppy disk, and either to burn stuff to a CD or as Eternaldark says you can use a network cable - if you`re not going through a hub or a switch you`ll need to use crossover cable.

Thanks for the help . I think I get the gist of what your saying . Should I have trouble I will come back . Thanks again . :)

How do I know if I have a Network Adapter ? I have run Network Diagnostics which came up with (amongst other stuff) an 8 digit number then WAN Miniport (IP) (PASSED). Is that considered to be a Network Adapter ? Also what sort of ethernet cable do I need please. Thanks in advance (very much a newbie in networking) Am running Windows XP btw.

if your computer was bought within the last year(ish) it should have one. It looks like your modem port but slightly fatter.
And if you go into a pooter shop and ask for a standard ethernet cable they should sort you out.

Go to Control Panels - Network Connections. Do you have something there that says Local Area Network Connection? If you do then, yes you have a network card. If not your probably don`t.
BTW don`t listen to anything I say after this post cos I`m working my way through a bottle of champagne and feel decidedly p***ed already :D
Well, it seems I have an icon for a LAN or High speed internet connection - 1394 connection. That`s Firewire isn`t it ? No on second thoughts don`t answer that WR. Enjoy. :D
