Network Connection keeps disabling; please help!

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Wednesday, 3rd December 2003, 17:42

Right bare with me! My flatmate has just bought a wireless PCI card to join our network at home; the problem is, is that after about two minutes of using the connection from startup, his PC disconnects from the network. In his network connections settings a box comes up saying "disabled", and it can`t be enabled again until the PC is reset. Though obviously after resetting his PC the problem just happens again.

Its clearly a problem with his PC though, considering that when he had a 56K connection fitted recently, EXACTLY the same thing happened, which is why he joined our network. But like I said, it`s still is happening now and is a major annoyance as you can understand.

Everybody else`s connection is fine in the house, so we know the problem doesn`t lie there. I`ve checked his PC settings and can`t see anything that may be causing it! He has contacted his PC supplier (Multivision) and they said they`d call back tomorrow, but he`s not holding his breath as they`ve said that before.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated guys.... :(

What OS is he running? Windows 98 by any chance?
If XP, has he tried running the Update - there`s some additional Wireless networking software available on there which could help diagnosing the problem

Also - have you tried the card in another machine just to be sure it`s not that?

No its definitely not that. Thing is, he can`t update anyway because like I said it disconnects after a couple of minutes and so he doesn`t get time to download anything.

He is on XP btw, as we all are on the network.

Thanks for your help MilesR.

*UPDATE*
Tried the Windows Update, got about half-way through, and the connection died.

Sounds to me like he has the w32 ms blast virus has he got the patch from microsoft and is he running a anti virus program also a firewall if not he has probebly got it. does a box come up saying disconection in 60 seconds? if he has got it it is designed not to let you get ya updates from ms.

No it`s not the MS Blast Virus; He doesn`t get any boxes or anything come up. The network connection just goes; there`s no message box or anything. You just can`t use the internet. He only recently got the 56k connection and the problem existed there straight away, so he got rid of that and joined our network. Exactly the same problem though...

Here`s some ideas....

How about either trying an existing and working (ie one from your machine) card in his machine? and his in yours...just to make sure it`s not down to that specific hardware

Also, try switching PCI slots (if possible).

Then, if you`re on broadband, try and download the Windows XP service pack (1a I think) for him, then transfer it to his machine (probably best to burn to CD if network is not an option).

Also - you could also try a physical ethernet connection (network card) - to see if that has the same problem

Hope that helps

I ran a virus checker on his PC and it found the Welchia Worm. That was duly deleted, but obviously not the cause. The reason I don`t think it`s the PCI card itself, is because like I said the problem existed with the 56k modem. We thought that by him joining the network that the problem would go away; but obviously not.

How do I download the service pack to my computer without it automatically installing, so that I can put it on CD?

Thanks for all the help!

For the service pack, check this link:
www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/network.asp

It`s about 125MB

Hope that helps

Could also be cause by power management, look at the network card properties and see if the tick box for power management is selected.
