there was a discussion a while ago when Sandy Toksvic revealed she gets paid a lot less for Stephen Fry for hosting Qi - a lot of outrage for woman being paid less for "same job". But with celebrities it's different isn't it, it's not so much the job which commands the salary in that case, it's the person. and their celebrity status. Stephen Fry is a bigger star so can ask for more money.

But as is often the case, we don't know the full story.

Did she go into the interview, and they said they'd offer X (which happens to be Stephen Fry's salary/4 ) and she thought "ooh, that's a lot more than I get normally, yes please", and so everyone walked away happy.

I think I read she gets similar to Alan Davies, so it's not like she's being paid badly I'm sure. Maybe in 10 years time she'll be on the equivalent to what Fry was on as she'll have the experience then?Quote:

Probably Ed Sheeran, but so would I, but I can't sing or play guitar as well as either of them, and IT doesn't pay as well as that :(

A few years ago a woman wrote an interesting article about teh business world and women being paid less than men, but a lot of the time, it's their own fault.

company has 2 positions available, Man and woman get offered a job for  20k. Woman accepts, man says, I'd like 22k, company say yes, don't offer woman more, why would they, she was happy for 20k.

1 years time, pay review time, both staff members doing equally as well - woman offered 1k more, she's happy with that, now on 21k, man says, 1k isn't enough, he wants 2k more, company say fine.

woman is now on 21k, man on 24k, for same job. The article said how men are generally more willing to barter and haggle for more money than woman, so it pays off. Noone was discriminated against.

Not convinced it happens all over the private sector either, although we obviously hear stories such as the City and banking.

I worked for a multinational company from the mid 90's to early 00's and I never had to do a pay review.  I just got a letter stating I was getting an annual bonus and a pay rise, that was it.  As I moved from £17k when I started to just shy of £40k in around a decade, I can't say I disagreed with this policy.

Of course, I then got made redundant in the aftermath of Lehman Bros and our company over-expanding, but hey...

Surely the whole point is that the likes of Toksvig are not employees in the normal sense of the word, they are self-employed entities with agents who negotiate on their behalf.

Therefore all this talk about men and women not being able to negotiate equally doesn't apply in the slightest as I doubt Toksvig even spoke to the BBC paymasters in person...
