Glastonbury 2005 - Rubbish or What?

112,000 people

112,000 people who spent an awdful lot of money.

To see what???

Where were the `name` bands? Only one real `Headline` act the whole weekend(Coldlpay) the rest a mixture of washed up has beens (Ian Brown-sounded like a drunk Manc who gotup to do Kareoke and an hour later wouldn`t sit down!!), a lot of never-will-be`s alongside the occasional ok act.

OK, I know we all have our own personal taste in music, but whatever taste you have, don`t you think the organisers really short changed the festival goers with a substandard line up? When you look around at the major festivals in Europe-and even the others in this country, Glastonbury 2005 was very weak.

If it hadn`t been for the weather on Friday, it would have been VERY dull indeed!

i`d say `what`.

The Primal Scream set I saw last night was f***ing excellent. The Basement Jaxx one - excellent. The White Stripes (who im not actually a fan of) played a very, very good set

Some of the world music they showed on BBC3 and 4 was really good (belgian reggae?).

The headliners did seem to pander to the `Fashion Band` fad thats been going for the last year or so, but if you dug further down the list some of the acts were very good.

What im listening to (if youre interested)

Yes, i`m not doubting there was some good stuff buried away in there, and good is subjective (Though I thought the White Stripes were bl**dy awful!!) but unlike previous years, the lack of `name` acts to headline was severely lacking, and the `quality` was a lot harder to find

In some ways though, I`d prefer to see Glastonbury move away from massive headliners -if not then every year it becomes more and more like all the "other" festivals, with a similar roster of bands playing because they`re the ones touring that year.

What frustrated me about the coverage on the beeb (although they did give it a heck of a lot of airtime, which was great) was that you could end up seeing the same set from (say) Coldplay about 3 times in an evening as you flicked between the channels - why not just run a live feed from each of the stages and let the viewer choose which act to watch - that would be fantastic.

when I turned onto it on saturday there was some drunk on stage covered in mud wailing. I later found out it was some band called "baby shambles". I have heard school bands with more talent. That put me right off.

Isn`t that the legend in his own mind who goes by the name of Pete Doherty? Don`t know much about him other than what I read in the papers...

Not really interested in Glastonbury really, but flicked over and caught virtually the whole set by Brian Wilson. That really was a stonking performance. 8)

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

I sometimes turn it on to see if there are any interesting new bands cos i dont follow the current music scene anymore. Saw a band called The Doves - yaaaaawn! Now i know why i have given up on the current music scene - they reminded me of a US band called American Music Club and they were doing similar stuff 15 years ago.

i wasnt at glastonbury so i cant vouch for the quality, but i think you should be looking at the bigger picture here. a new musical cycle is coming. there are so many up and coming top quality bands its hard to keep up. yeah recently weve had coldplay, stereophonics, keane, but since the early nineties with blur and oasis there hasnt really been a surge of musical talent. for those at glastonbury this year i think youll be able to look back in ten years and say that "i was there" to witness the process of a new cycle starting to take shape. with bands like the killers, kasabian, kaiser chiefs, franz ferdinand, the bravery, the zutons etc and other personal favs of mine like jimmy eat world, doves and green day (although green day are hardly new) i dont think theres a better time to be a music fan..
oh and by the way ian brown is a legend!! dont forget that the stone roses were a major influence in resurrecting (pardon the pun) the british music industry in the early 90s...

"take a look around ther`s something happening.."
