Pavement....recommendations

Issac Hunt (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 6th July 2004, 15:31

I`ve heard stuff about (but nothing by) this american group, so wondered if anybody could suggest a good place to start, is there a `Best of` for example? I like The Pixies, Husker Du, That Petrol Emotion, etc, so......

Mods: I didn`t realise there was a Music forum...stick it in there for us can you? Thanks!

Will move as requested.

Try Slanted and Enchanted - a truly great album.

Then after that buy the 1981 album Hex Enduction Hour by The Fall and see if you can work out who influenced early Pavement :D

Shame they went all country-music on us after that - they showed great promise.

Thanks for that. I actually did buy Hex Enduction Hour.... in 1981! If that`s an influence it`s sounds even more promising. I think Slanted and Enchanted (was that the debut?) is now available as a super duper doubler with Peel sessions, live stuff etc.

One of the best groups of the 90`s. I would recommend Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain as a great introduction to the band. It kept the same mentality of Slanted and Enchanted but also showed a sneek peek of later Pavement work. Also, there was nothing bad about Country-style Pavement.

There`s also a 2CD set of Slanted and Enchanted that includes a live show from Manchester I think. They`ve also got a 2 Disc DVD out, you should pick it up for the price of one DVD. It`s got all the videos, 2 live shows and a documentary by Lance Bangs (who did the Sonic Youth DVD aswell). Compared to most Music DVDs, it`s a bargain.

Tremendous band - saw them at the Brixton Acadamy a long while back. I agree re Crooked Rain... - great album.

(And just what`s wrong with country music, Clayts? ;) )

What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?
