Learning to play Call of Duty

Brian Elliott (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 15th June 2010, 11:59

I`ve finally got around to trying out Call of Duty with the Modern Warfare (1) game for the 360. After a couple of quick tries at single-player mode and then some lessons from my nephew, I`m starting to get the basic hang of it, but I`m wondering what is the best way to learn the game?

For the last couple of nights I`ve been playing the Free For All online (much more fun than single player, it seems), but have, of course, been getting hammered. For a ten-minute session I am usually only racking up about 3 kills and 12 deaths. I would say that this can`t be too bad for three evenings worth of play.  :P

I have absolutely no idea what I`m doing when it comes to choosing guns etc, but what I`ve found is that it`s taking me many more shots to kill someone, than it is for them to kill me. It is possible that my aim is a little off! Looking at the killcam, some people clearly have amazing eyesight, because I`m often so far away that I`m barely visible on the replay. I`m also getting snuck up on a lot, and killed from behind as I`m looking elsewhere.

I guess the question is, is there something I should know, or be practicing? Any other tips for me?

Cheers!

as the old saying goes... practice does (apparently) make perfect.

what you have to remember is that MW1 has been out for donkeys years and chances
are, you`re up against uber prestige players who know the maps and weapons inside
out. they will have custom weapon set-ups which will enable them to track down "n0obs"
(sorry Brian!) with ease.

certain "perks" will enable them to run faster and not make a sound - hence the sneaky
kills.

all you can do is practice, practice and practice some more. eventually you will get to the point
where you will win games... you will also still die a lot though!!

tbh, if i were you, i`d have a go at team deathmatch... that way, you at least have the luxury of
knowing that each match represents a 50/50 chance of winning or losing. if you`re on the
winning side, your points tally will increase significantly to the point where you will be able
to choose your own weaponds and perks.

I too am useless at this game. I could go for some practice one on ones if you fancy it/

oh, you could also do what`s known as a "miles" amongst the MAD clan.... get one of the
default weapons with a grenade launcher attachment..... negates the need for accuracy
as the grenade has quite a good blast radius.

soz miles :D

Thanks for the tips.

I`m finding myself getting a little annoyed at my kill/death ratio (I think some of this is down to my lack of knowledge of weapons to use), but I am continually looking forward to a game at the end of the day, so that`s a good sign.

Although I`m a noob, I`m enjoying the online much more than single player right now. I don`t know when I`ll get around to doing that!

it is very addictive.. with that "just one more go" feeling to it.

i still haven`t finished the single player campaign on MW2... waaaaay too busy for that
playing team deathmatch!

Brian, you cant go wrong with the MP5 or silenced M16 with stopping power on MW1, practice definately makes perfect. If your unsure of some of the maps have a go on them in a private match on your own or split screen with someone and get a feel for them.

If you haven`t already i recommend you switch your melee to your right thumb stick and your crouch button to B, it`s much easier/quicker to get knife kills if you run into someone. Also try not to worry about your kill death ratio while your still in the learning curve, everyone else started the same way:D

Try not to stand around in one place for too long and avoid going to the middle of the map, move around it, near the limits of the map. It works for me... of course the best advice is to practice.

hope it helps
