Yamaha HTIB-20 for £200, good buy?

Darren W (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 5th June 2002, 13:38

Please help a newbie...
My local Comet has the Yamaha HTIB20 for only £200, should i go for this or is it worth the extra £160 for the new HTIB45?

I will be using the Cyberhome AD512 DVD as the source. BTW will i be able to listen to a DTS encoded disk on the HTIB20 as this player has an onboard DAC? Thanks..

The receiver in the HTiB20 is the RXV396RDS, which does not have DTS decoding, only DD, so I`d save a bit more and get something a bit more current.
HTiB45 can be got here http://www.qed-uk.com/?i=HAy-Y0k85mJ1&bg=225&bp=b45s&v=8 for £340.

Thanks for the comments Richard. I guess the HTIB45 would be more future proof as it has lots more features, however i am a bit disturbed that the speakers supplied are the same as the HTIB20. Not having the ability to audtion the two amps in question doesn`t help things much, so does anybody out there have any first hand experience of the Yamaha Home Theatre in a Box systems. Much appreciated..

You may be better off getting different speakers - there are some slightly beefier ones called the NSP320 (as opposed to the NSP220), which young Westy rates well enough (within their price range, anyway!). I think the NSP220s are very similar to those that come with the VS10.

You need to decide on a budget, really, as if you don`t watch out, you`ll be spiralling up and up. An alternative would be a speaker bundle form Richer Sounds, plus getting the amp seperately - you should also consider the Marantz 4200 and perhaps the Denon 1602 as well as the yammy.
