Acoustic Solutions 551 dts Problem

...................................... (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 5th May 2002, 20:08

I cannot get my 551 to play any disc in dts. I have set up the player and tested all speaker outputs.

Went I set up the disc to play dts I get no sound from the speakers at all.

Am I doing something wrong or is it the player?

I think you`ll find that this player, like most with a Dolby decoder, only passes dts on to an external decoder. It can`t actually play it itself. You need a dts amplifier. A bummer, but what can you expect for so little money?

Thanks Steve, but according to the manual it has a built in DTS decoder.

I`m not sure that the `551 has an on-board dts decoder, sadly, although it should be capable of outputting a dts bitstream to a dts-capable amp.

If I`m mistaken, have a dig around in the Digital Audio Out (or Audio Set Up) menu or equivalent, and ensure that dts is set to bitstream if you`re connected to an amp digitally.

The other thing is, are you selecting the dts option in the DVD menu itself ? (a common error !)

Can you tell us what your kit is please (e.g. what makes the sound, and how is it linked to the `551) ?

You were right. Although I was told it outputs dts decoded. I went back to RS and was upgraded for free to the Kenwood 5050.

Thank for your help though.

I don`t know what you exspect for the money the term( pay peanuts you get monkeys) i hope you are actually using a dts disc. I recomend if you are still having problems take it back to the retailer and ask if you can upgrade to a decent tested player that has good reviews .....

Some people don`t have the luxury of being able to pick and choose and buy what they can afford.

If you can`t give constructive advice then don`t bother
