pioneer dv646a static pop problem

manfromanotherplace (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 30th April 2002, 12:06

Hi everyone,

Just got a Pioneer dvd646a - uk model reprogrammed to multi-region. Got it home and put in a couple of R1 discs to make sure it played them and everything was fine. It`s connected to WS Panasonic TV with surround sound via cinema quest RGB scart lead. Settled down to watch the Terminator (R1) and heard a lot of static pops coming from main two tv speakers. Put in another disc (Ghostbusters R1) and it also did it - although neither did when I first tried them. Pushed on the scart connecters just in case and tried again. Ghostbusters seemed fine but then Terminator still did it. Left it a while and then Terminator stopped doing it! After a little while longer it started again and scart lead still appeared to be in place which led me to believe it wasn`t down to that. Now I`m totally stumped! Does anyone know what`s going on with this? I`ve had no problem with watching the TV or with other devices connected via the same scart socket...

Thanks,

Dave

Hello,

If you get this resolved, could you let me know ? My 646a should be arriving soon (Techtronics are quite slow I think, 7 days already!!) and will look out for similar problems? I think it has 2 RGB Sockets, does it happen on both ?

Are you happy generally with the Pioneer (Picture, sound etc...) ?

Thanks,

Neil.

Neil,

Sure I`ll let you know. No it only has one RGB socket. And yeah I`m more than happy with the picture and the sound. I spent ages looking into getting a player (as I`m sure most people do before deciding on their first machine) before deciding on the Pioneer. With the popping thing I"ve not had chance to fully appreciate the sound - but from what I heard so far it sounded pretty fine to me! And I`m totally blown away by the picture. The street scenes in Ghostbusters looked so sharp and clear that they looked like they were from a videogame! In fact my Dreamcast didn`t like quite so good as I thought after that! I`m sure you`ll be very happy with it. I just have to sort out this damn popping problem. I`ll post as soon as I have any news. Likewise let me know how you get on.

Cheers,

Dave

I too have the DV646A & also had this problem but I still had the problem when using my Philips DV710 !! I have now SOLVED the problem. When connecting to a receiver, I was using a Coaxial lead & got a lot of pops etc.. when in DTS mode, however I replaced my coax with an Optical Fibre cable & voila no more pops etc

Hello Lee and Dave,

What Receivers do you have, could teh popping be relating to that ?

Regards,

Neil.

Well if it`s the case that I`m only going to resolve the problem by connecting it with an optical cable them I`m pretty knackered as for the time being it`s only going to be connected via scart to my widescreen panasonic TV. I really hope that this isn`t the only way around the problem - but thanks for the info nevertheless.

And Neil - I got my machine from Spatial Audio in Tottenham Court Road in London. The guy who runs it, Craig, has been there for about 20 years. I know cos I bought stuff from him about 20 years ago! He also owns Brian`s Hifi just down the road from it. He`s an honest guy and he won`t bullshit you. He`s got me a replacement machine waiting for me to pick up but I`m really concerned even with a replacment the problem will still remain. Just now I tried it out again. Played the Terminator. Popped for the first few minutes. Turned it off and on again and has been fine since. I know it`ll go back to it though. This is just plain weird!
