what do people reckon on this?

i`d only use it for it`s standalone functions (ie. not as a soundcard), but is it worth the money? it looks pretty sexy and seems to have all the functions i`d need for a decent sound system (minus speakers of course)

You`d need an amp too (or amplified speakers) - assume you`re looking at this because you have no decoder on board. Certainly about the cheapest stand alone decoder around - remember it`s only a Dolby Digital converter.

Add the cost of that to the cost of some amplified speakers (say the Videologic Z500s), and you`re nearly at £200, and no DTS decoding. Might be better to save for a bit and go for a Yamaha VS10 (£280) - decoder (DD and DTS), amplifier and speakers in a nice bundle.

cheers for that.

i`ve got the much despised Scan 2500 (mine works finr though) and according to the scan site it has "Dual Decoding : Dolby Digital (AC-3) & DTS decoding"

http://scan.co.uk/sc2500.htm

would that help? or am i just clutching at straws?

In that case, you don`t need the Extigy. Have a look on the back of your player - there should be a set of 6 phono outputs labelled front L & R, Centre, Rear L & R, Subwoofer. You just need to connect these to a suitable speaker set, if you want to do it on the cheap. The Novatech ones (£100) have been favourably commented upon, and they come with a basic remote, too!

Get yourself an old cereal packet, some silver foil, some bottle tops and some spray paint. Maybe an LED kit from Maplins if you`re feeling flush. That plus lashings of sticky back plastic and away you go - shiny gizmo box sorted!
