Decoder/Reciever help needed by novice.
Hello All
i have a Dansai 852 dvd, i would like to buy a decoder/reciver for this dvd
I`m also looking to buy the videologic ZXR-500 speaker set,
Which deco/reciever would you recomend for this set up ?
As you can tell from the above i`m on a very limited budget ( poorly payed
job, 2 kids, mortgage, old banger of a car, etc. )
Thanks for any help or advice.

Right:
Decoder: stand alone device that decodes the digital ouput from a DVD and converts it into the individual channels
A/V Amplifer: Amplifies (!) - all current ones will also contain a decoder
Receiver: Amplifier with a radio tuner built in.
Stand alone decoders are thin on the ground (unless very high end stuff), but I did see this recently - the Creative Soundblaster Extigy. Only does DD5.1 (no DTS), and it`s £125. http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?action=info&AvdID=&CatID=&GrpID=&p=21738&s=fp
Bizarrly, it would be cheaper to buy a different DVD player with on board decoding - for instance the Cyberhome 528 is available for £99. It doesn`t seem as glitch free as it`s predecessor, the 512, though.
You really would be better off saving for a bit and getting an amp - Richer Sounds do amps starting at £150 with all the decoding you need built in - the Yamaha RXV520 looks a good bet at £179. OK it`s more, but you can then get decent speakers when the cash becomes available. You could also start off with some old speakers you might have knocking around - not ideal, but might keep you going.

For £200 you can get a VideoLogic Digitheatre from www.qed-uk.com - this comes with a seperate Dolby Prologic and Digital decoder and has had some rave reviews from DVD and PC mags and websites.

Good idea harry, I`d forgotten all about that.
OKbert - this is a decoder WITH speakers, so no need to get the ZR500s too - again won`t be DTS, but I really wouldn`t worry about that too much. There is a DTS version, but it`s more expensive.
