I think it depends on the media you watch it on, and how reliable your network connection is.

I first saw Ghostbusters 2 on pirate round a friends, I didn't want to watch it but my friends did, and the quality was so dire when I finally saw it in the cinema it really was like watching a different movie.

I stopped buying VHS a few years before DVD because I got fed up with the awful low quality of the audio, sometimes there would be a horrible buzzing or flutter on the audio tracks (Aliens was one that sprung to mind) that just made it very hard to enjoy.

A few DVDs aside, I would agree with you that once you get to DVD and beyond, it matters a lot less, certainly audio wise. But on a very big screen, Blu-ray really looks a lot better than DVD, so I just watch Blu-rays these days.

I do like that we have the choice though. You can watch movies on your mobile phone on the train, and I can watch them in my home cinema, everybody's happy!

I opted for "Not for the next few years at least", because a) When our current TV packs up, 4K would have to be affordable, b) when our blu-ray players pack up, 4K would have to be affordable, and c) the discs would have to become affordable, otherwise I'm not interested.

Blu-ray has dropped in price nicely now. I recently bought a smart little Samsung BD player with iPlayer and Youtube on it, for a mere £40 and it loads really quickly and streams smoothly (ethernet only). It was just for the bedroom, so I didn't want to spend much, but really chuffed with it.

When buying discs, I'll still get DVD for older movies or fairly run of the mill films, but I always opt for BD for action/effects movies now.

Where's the option "When I get a TV of such gargantuan enormity to make it worthwhile"

Warner aims to have 35 4K titles by the end of 2016:
http://variety.com/2015/digital/news/warner-home-video-joins-4k-ultra-hd-blu-ray-disc-fray-1201669612/

First four titles will be Mad Max: Fury Road, San Andreas, The Lego Movie and Pan.

Wonder how much they'll sell and if it will put Warner off making that 35 target?

A bit of a bump on this thread, I see

The question should be, will you ever buy a bluray disk?

There are still to this day very few people buying Bluray disks in shops. You only have to go into HMV and there may be two shelves dedicated to Bluray, and DVD still overwhelms the shop.

As for me,  I have never bought, or intent to buy Blueray while DVD format lives. I assume thats the only way they will get people to buy Bluray, if there are no other options.

Meanwhile, I will just wait for 'Video memory sticks' (no moving parts), just plug in and play, which will supersede Bluray in the next few years, he he.

I think "In shops" is the important bit there.

as some of you may remember many years ago...

VHS films cost about £70

it's wasn't too long ago DVDs in HMV were just over £20, so us sensible ppl "in the know" bought them from Play 24/7 for £15, especially when we could get the R1 release when the film had just come out in the cinema here!

HMV had a small shelf of DVDs, Virgin for me had a better selection I think, but for some time, they both had loads more VHS tapes.

I doubt I've ever bought a film for full price in HMV's shop, I guess I'm part of the reason a lot of their shops shut down, online retailer so much cheaper.

I don't buy many films now, but if I do, I buy the Blu Ray, if it's available, if it's a TV show that I collect and there's only DVD, I buy that.

I'm only likely to upgrade to 4k, when things need replacing, and the price is negligable. So right now I wouldn't buy a 4k TV, and if say I was given one, I doubt I'd upgrade the PS3 or Blu ray player.

I thought December 2015 was when the first UHD discs were going to be on shop shelves...

http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/4k-blu-ray-discs-arriving-in-2015-to-fight-streaming-media/

I don't see 4K selling until 90" TVs and lounges large enough to accomodate them become commonplace. On the current average UK screen size, I don't think anyone will be able to tell the difference.
