The boxes seem very expensive. :/

Got a freesat HD telly, but not a recording box. I suspect it's been a bit sidelined by Freeview HD so the low take-up keeps the hardware expensive.

Alfie is spot on. My Dad has a Freesat HD+ system and loves it. He went for that because the Freeview signal was so unreliable in his area that he was frequently left with no channels to watch at all. He will never subscribe to anything, so Freesat was the only way for him to go.

It's a case of needs must. If your Freeview signal is good, stick with that.

It's not (at least it wasn't) where I'm moving to. :/ I'd much rather go with Freeview if I could!

If you already have a Freesat telly, look to see if you  can simply plug an external hard drive into a USB slot (I can on mine).

Although buying a Freesat telly from scratch for the HDD will probably be more expensive.

Just got my Mum a replacement Freesat box from Richer Sounds. It is a Humax and I think it was £99. Doesn't record but has the facility to connect an external drive and is far superior in response and picture quality compared to the old one.

Is that HD? And does it record with an external drive?

I
t is HD and records to external drive and also upscales all the channels to a best "attempt" at HD, although some are so poor quality it is a losing battle. I suppose the minus is if you do want to record you can't watch another channel unless it is from a freeview receiver in the TV. Factor in the cost of an external drive and it is probably cheaper to get a one does all unit but for my Mum it was ideal.
Menu is far better than the old one and uses a new interface called freetime. You can also connect via ethernet to get all the catch up TV stuff. I thought it was a reasonable price for what she wanted.

Thanks for the info, I have an external drive sitting around doing very little, this might be ideal!
