Sony or Sharp Mini Disc portable...which is best?

bear (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 21st March 2002, 15:17

Bought a Sony Portable CD player at Christmas and it was streets ahead of the others I tried, so now Im going to buy Mini Disc portable as well and it was going to be a Sony, went on the web looking at reviews and the Sharp models were hitting 5 stars from most user`s reviews, so now can`t decide wether to give Sharp a try or stick to my beloved Sony.

Personaly I would stick with Sony, I have had a few over the years & they have all performed great with no problems. If the Sharp was a lot cheaper then perhaps a rethink.

I`d go for Sony too. I`ve had one for nearly 2 years now without any problems. I had a Sharp originally but it broke down after 9 months - the laser assembly stopped moving.

I would recommend the Sharp as I have had mine for about 2 years now (MDS702 not available now) no probs used at work 5 days a week. Also on the technology program LBC 1152 (London) the techie man mentioned that the Sony had too many sub menus compared to the Sharp`s. May make no difference to you, only that all your gear is all Sony/Sharp/JVC etc either way it`s a great cheap format that leaves those who wasted there money on mp3 players standing!

I have a Sony portable MD and no problems yet even tho it is 3 or 4 years old.
Last place I worked a guy bought a portable Sharp MD from Richer sounds. He had to return and get replacement 4 times before he got one that lasted more than a month!

I got a Sony MZ-R55, portable recorder.

Also a Hoontech soundcard with Optical out.

Being recording from MP3 for about 2 years now, no problems.

Quality is brill, I`d like a bit more battery life

I`ve used in for about 2 years, using a cassette adapter as well so I can use in the car.

If it goes `pop` I`d buy another ( or equivalent) from Sony straight the way.

Which is the best? Does it matter?
