This is probably *the* most asked question ever about DVD playback on the PS2!

In their infinite wisdom, Sony neglected to include a SCART socket on the PS2. This means that, according to the DVD Forum licence, they are not allowed to include a RGB output - the licensing terms state that a DVD player`s RGB output can *only* be in the form of a SCART socket.

Basically it meant that they had to cripple the RGB output in order to keep the PS2 "legal", and they did this by forcing Component output through the A/V socket whenever a DVD is played, even if RGB output is selected in the setup menu. This results in a "green screen" effect on a RGB compatible TV.

There are a couple of ways you can get around this piece of crap. The first is to use a DVD Region X, which enables the RGB output as well as allowing you to play discs from other regions. The second is to modify the player to force RGB output at all times. There are online instructions for this, just do a web search for "PS2 RGB mod".

That`s because it`s designed to do that! Part of Sony`s grand plan.

I heard it was so people couldn`t copy DVD`s to VCR (no macrovision on RGB) - but how many people have RGB inputs on their VCR!? Anyway, you can get round it...
