Denon AVR 1602 Sound Problem with new Dolby Digital Bitsteam
There have been several messages posted about the soundtrack problems with Pearl Harbour and the Denon AVR 1602 receiver. From reading the announcement put out by Dolby (see http://dolby.custhelp.com) it would seem the fault lies with the Denon amps being unable to correctly decode new bitstream flags present in the new Dolby Digital standard on DVDs such as Pearl Harbour. Onkyo are alos affected (see http://www.onkyousa.com/article_top.cfm?id=21).
Curiously, What Hi Fi, Feb 2002 Issue, recommends the Denon in combination with a Toshiba and Wharfedale combination. And state how wonderful this sounds when playing Pearl Harbour. My experience (confirmed by Dolby`s note above) is that the Pearl Harbour 5.1 sound track sound gets muted by the Denon and you have to switch over to stereo to get an audible sound. I intend to ask What Hi Fi how they justify their review.
Any other Denon owners out there who have encountered this problem?
What can we do - other than ask for a refund and buy a different receiver?
RE: Denon AVR 1602 Sound Problem with new Dolby Digital Bitsteam
Presumably they were listening to the DTS soundtrack, which isn`t affected.
There was an article about this problem in this month`s WHF, and they quoted a Denon contact number: 01234 741200. You may want to give them a ring.
They also quoted a Denon chap who said "We`re awaiting further news from Denon Japan and Dolby on this flaw, which only affects our AVR-1602/1802 receivers. We`re keeping a list of users who`ve experienced the problem so we can contact them with the solution".
Also affects Kenwood and Onkyo products, so you`re not alone.
HTH!
