1. On `settings` what is the difference between `backlight` and `brightness`?
2. Is a dead pixel easy to spot and is it such an issue?
3. We`ve all seen the little diagrams for viewing distances for watching HD on different sized tellies. What are they for SD?
4. When setting up the picture for TV (rather than Blu-ray/HD) what is a good channel or programme to use for the settings, cos the picture seems to vary a lot between progs and channels?
5. When recording stuff off Freeview onto PVR, how much memory does it use? For example: 1/2 programme or 2 hour film?
Thanks!
The backlight controls the overall brightness of the light behind the display. The brightness control adjusts the intensity of the whites relative to the other colours.
It`s easy to spot if you`re close enough, but depending on what`s being shown it might not be an issue. On a 1080p display there are literally millions of tiny dots, so it could go unnoticed. I had a stuck pixel on my set (red) that was only obvious with some material. It`s unstuck a while back now though.
No idea about SD viewing distances.
I wouldn`t use a TV broadcast to calibrate any set. They just aren`t accurate enough.
Don`t have Freeview, but with Virgin recoding SD content directly relates to the available space. So if I have 80 hours and I record a 2 hour film I have 78 hours left. If I record a 2 hour HD film the space it occupies quadruples...

Freeview does have a test card broadcasting you could try using for setting up the picture, just follow these instructions shamelessly copied from another forum
1. Select BBCi channel 105
2. When BBCi appears press Yellow within 30 secs
3. Select another channel
4. Select BBCi channel 105
5. When BBCi appears press Green within 30 secs
Edit: seems it has changed, you used to have to put in a code number and press red, green, yellow and then blue. Now when you get to this bit a new screen comes up and it says at the bottom press Green for Testcard W. Do this and wait a few seconds and testcard W should appear.
