Yelo 800DVD Almost Great

SVC (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 19th February 2002, 12:03

Before I received the player I was aware of mixed comments from various sites but most of the bad comments were to do with comparisons against more pricey or less featured players. They generally seemed invalid or non-specific so I went ahead and got one.

This player offers DTS out and DTS decoded out (5.1) along with composite, SCART (RGB) and S-Video outputs.

The secret menu that allows multi region and defeats Macrovision is easy to get to and simple to use (virtually identical menu to the Dansai 852 menu to do the same thing).

The problem was that when plugged into my main TV the picture would black out for half a sec occasionally for no apparent reason. On a second TV the SCART input to the TV would overdrive the TV video when another channel was selected. With any other SCART source these problems were not present.
I contacted Amazon and got all the return info I needed. The Customer services people were friendly and appeared genuinely concerned that I was not happy with the unit. After I posted the package back I re-contacted Amazon with my tracking number for the parcel. An even more pleasant and helpful (fellow Kiwi), Karen, took all the details so that my credit card could be credited with the postal cost (haven`t come across that service from on line retail before).
I posted the original unit 5:30PM on Friday night and a new one arrived midday Tuesday. Could not believe the turn around time.
Anyway the new unit suffers the same overdriven problem, to a lesser extent on the second of the above TV`s, but no problems at all on the main TV. These problems do not occur when Comp Video is used (the RCA Video connection). I have not tested the S-Video connection.

My rating of 4 is solely based on the fact that Yelo seem not to strictly adhere to SCART Electrical specs. (Possibly an old technique to improve colour of substandard units that I have myself used in the past when working on old/faulty TV`s, but not one I expect on new equipment). If Yelo does suffer from poor quality colour output I wish they would address the problem rather than chucking out loads of level on the RGB lines.

While I was checking this products feature list on the web, I could not get a definite statement on how it handled RCE titles from the US.

Various sites list RCE titles, the most frequently quoted as RCE are
A Knights Tale
Charlie`s Angles
Final Fantasy
The 6th Day

I have checked them all (US versions) on the Yelo 800DVD with the Region code set to Bypass and all play with no problems at all.

Multi Folder MP3 discs are easy to browse through and play, as are CD`s.
I also have many VCD`s from Asia, some of which have very poor quality recordings (digital distortion, marks on the discs). I was surprised at how well the Yelo handled errors on discs that were otherwise not worth watching on various other equipment.

All in all I am very happy with this player, the price is excellent for all the features. I was concerned about paying 200 pounds for it to start with but after now having paid 150 and using it I think it is worth the regular price, and a bargain at 150 from Amazon.

Cheers

Difficult to know at the mo because my TV handles PAL 60.

The best I can do for ya is to record from DVD on a cheap VCR, which will not be able to handle Pal 60.

I`ll get back to ya if you think this is OK

Hi MOZZ

Sorry for the delay in response.

I could not get the Yelo player to give any problem-outputting PAL

The Menu allows for selection of TV type and when this is set to PAL the short recordings I made on several types (Region 0 2,1 and 1 RCE) were really good.

It does seem that the output is PAL 50 at the Moment unless others tell you different.

At 150 pounds I don`t think there is much better.

Spin is dead right, I re-read my review and should not of said decoded DTS when I clearly meant Dolby 5.1.

By the way I haven`t seen any Kiiro`s at less than 150 pounds Spin, but I assume from your response that you work for Kiiro.

If that is correct then I can`t quite understand why then, that companies customer services and engineers were so very inefficient, and did not ever mention the returns policy you speak of. Getting them to understand simple electrical problems was also incredibly hard. The fob off tactics were equally annoying.

Anyway, I`m not trying to get into a so-and-so contest with a salesman, and if you don`t work for Kiiro.co.uk then I take it all back.
